Question

I have a 6 speed older cassette with a double 52/42 from my old bike. I recently got a Cannondale CAAD8 frame and everything is fine, except my braze on shifters. The new frame doesn't have downtube bosses. Can I substitute a brake lever/shifter (9 speed) for now, until I change my drive train? Will it work? I can't afford to buy a whole new wheel set and drive train all at once.

you MIGHT be able to get a gear or two to work, but it will not work good, or anywhere close to good.

I am sure you can pick up an old 105 wheel off ebay pretty cheap along with a used r-der, but do yourself a favor and get a new chain and cassette. You will also want to update your c-rings.

I am sure with a bit of time you can build something pretty cheap. Also look for a complete bike someone is selling cheap, you can rob the parts off of it and build up your frame. Also check craigslist.com for cheap bikes.

Thanks for the info. That's what I figured, but was hoping to get the bike on the road already. I'm anxious to get on the road again. I will definitely follow your advice. I'm already watching a few shimano ultegra auctions on ebay.
