I have a 6 speed older cassette with a double 52/42 from my old bike. I recently got a Cannondale CAAD8 frame and everything is fine, except my braze on shifters. The new frame doesn't have downtube bosses. Can I substitute a brake lever/shifter (9 speed) for now, until I change my drive train? Will it work? I can't afford to buy a whole new wheel set and drive train all at once. |

you MIGHT be able to get a gear or two to work, but it will not work good, or anywhere close to good.
I am sure you can pick up an old 105 wheel off ebay pretty cheap along with a used r-der, but do yourself a favor and get a new chain and cassette. You will also want to update your c-rings.
I am sure with a bit of time you can build something pretty cheap. Also look for a complete bike someone is selling cheap, you can rob the parts off of it and build up your frame. Also check craigslist.com for cheap bikes. |

| Thanks for the info. That's what I figured, but was hoping to get the bike on the road already. I'm anxious to get on the road again. I will definitely follow your advice. I'm already watching a few shimano ultegra auctions on ebay. |
