Summer Race Report
By Coryn Rivera

I’m finally home from my journey of the highlights of my season. First off was the Jr. Track Nationals on July 1, 2007. I placed 1st in the 500m time trial with a time of 37.47 which is currently the National Record for 15-16 women. The next day was the scratch race, I placed 2nd. On the third day I won the final points race. With winning 2 out of 3 races I won the overall women 15-16 omnium. I also participated in the Jr. Women Team Sprint. My other teammate was Collen Hayduk. We beat second place by a whopping 7 seconds. Collen being 17-18, we both had to go through Anti-Doping. On July 4th there was an Independence Day Grand Prix. I raced in the Elite Womens Points Race, Sarah Uhl won and I placed 4th overall.

On the drive to Jr. Road National Championships in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania my parents got in a bad accident in our motorhome. They are currently recovering from the accident. And our motorhome is completely totaled. Luckily I was able to get some hospitality from my friend Kendall Ryan.

Celebrating on the podium at the Le Tour de L’Avenir du Saguenay.

A couple weeks later the first race of Jr. Road Nationals was the 20km Time Trial. The course was held on a highway. I won over Jessica Prinner by 1min20sec. The next day was the road race. From early on in the race I went on a breakaway with Jessica Yeaton. I went solo with 16km to go. And lastly was the criterium. It was pouring rain and nobody in the field wanted to risk crashing so our field stayed together the whole race. On the final straight I sprinted 1.2sec away from the field to win my 5th national championship this year and my 15th national championship ever.

A couple days later I started the drive to Quebec, Canada for the Le Tour de L’Avenir du Saguenay. This tour is like Le Tour de L’Abitibi but for 15-16 men and 15-18 women. My team consisted of Kaitlin Antonneau (IS-Corp/Racine, WI), Jessica Yeaton (Kaladi-Subway/Anchorage, AK), Kendall Ryan (Major Motion/ Ventura, CA) and myself, Coryn Rivera (Kahala-LaGrange/Tustin, CA). We were originally supposed to ride under the USA National Team but there was an error and our team was under Major Motion Cycling. Le Tour de L’Avenir du Saguenay was four days long that consisted of 6 stages. The first stage was a 53km circuit road race, I placed 1st with a huge lead of 6min. Later that night was the team time trial. During the time checks we were leading but unfortunately Jessica Yeaton crashed and we ended up in 4th place. The next day was a 63km road race that ended at the top of a ski resort. I just rode with the top females and I placed 3rd still with a lead of 6min. The next day was a 7km Individual time trial, I placed 2nd. Later that night was a criterium. It was pouring rain and the final turn was covered with crosswalk paint that made the course very dangerous. Our field of about 50 riders had a crash almost every lap. Even Kaitlin Antonneau crashed. Luckily the rest of the team stayed upright. A girl rolled of the front with an 18sec lead. I won the field sprint but the commissars relegated me to 7th place for "obstructing the sprint" everyone knew that I held my line since I led the sprint out, but I was fine with the decision since I still kept my 6min lead. Then next and final day was a circuit race that went around the High School that all the teams stayed at. I stayed with the leading women, on the final lap I sprinted away with 400m to go and won the final stage and overall GC. At the ceremony I popped my first bottle of "champagne", it was actually de-alcoholized wine. My team also won the team competition. Finally later that night we all left to start the long journey home.

Now that I’m home I actually have to leave in a week to attend a National ID Talent Camp in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This camp that I have qualified for is a camp that some racers dream to go to.

The last few weeks have been a blast. I’ve accomplished my goals with fun, met plenty of new friends from all over the world, and learned so much more.
