A Maverick Who Helped Redefine Modern Cycling
The Visionary Behind Cannondale
Joe Montgomery, founder of Cannondale, helped reshape the modern bicycle industry through bold thinking, unconventional ideas, and an unrelenting belief in innovation. The values that define Cannondale today—creativity, ambition, and a willingness to challenge convention—can be traced back to its beginnings in 1971 when he founded Cannondale in the loft of the Cannondale train station in Wilton, Connecticut.
It is with sadness that we mark the passing of Joe Montgomery, who died on Friday, January 2, 2026.
A True Cycling Industry Maverick
Montgomery was widely regarded as a visionary entrepreneur and a true original within the cycling world. He approached bicycle design differently, helping to popularize lightweight aluminum frames at a time when steel dominated the market. That willingness to question norms became a cornerstone of Cannondale’s identity and influenced the broader evolution of performance cycling.
From a Simple Idea to Industry-Changing Innovation
The idea that sparked Cannondale’s creation came from a simple observation: a cyclist laboring uphill under the weight of a heavy backpack. That moment inspired the company’s first product—a bicycle trailer designed to carry gear more efficiently. From those early innovations, Cannondale expanded into cycling accessories, apparel, and eventually American-made, aluminum bicycle frames that would leave a lasting mark on the industry.
Building a Culture of Creativity and Trust
Beyond engineering and design, Montgomery’s greatest contribution may have been his leadership style. He fostered a culture built on trust, creativity, and optimism, encouraging his team to pursue ambitious ideas and take meaningful risks. That spirit of innovation remains deeply embedded in the Cannondale brand.
A Lasting Partnership with SoCalCycling.com
For SoCalCycling.com and the SoCalCycling.com Elite Cycling Team, Cannondale’s impact is also deeply personal. Over a 16-year partnership, Cannondale provided support for the Team and riders and made a big impact in the SoCal cycling community. We are grateful for that long-standing relationship and the role Cannondale played in our journey.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Montgomery family and to everyone at Cannondale during this difficult time.

Thank you, Joe. Your vision continues to shape cycling—and will carry forward for generations to come.
