Major Ambitions for Trek-Segafredo Leaders
After an uprooted 2020, four-time Grand Tour winner Vincenzo Nibali is eyeing a return to his home race, the Giro d’Italia, in 2021. Nibali won the general classification in 2013 and 2016 and has amassed seven stage wins in the Italian Grand Tour. After competing in the Giro, Nibali is planning for his ninth start of the Tour de France, a race where he has achieved an overall victory (2016) and six stage wins.
Bauke Mollema is looking to bounce back after crashing and fracturing his wrist in last year’s Tour de France. The Dutchman is scheduled to line up alongside Nibali at the Giro d’Italia, the only Grand Tour where Mollema is yet to win a stage. With unfinished business, Mollema will also target a return to the Tour de France.
2021 looks to be a big year for Giulio Ciccone. The Italian climber is scheduled to join his two more senior teammates at his sixth Giro d’Italia. Ciccone’s aggressive racing has earned him two Giro stage wins and the mountains classification in 2019. Ciccone will have his chance to lead the Trek-Segafredo team at the final Grand Tour of the year, the Vuelta a España.
Jasper Stuyven and Mads Pedersen will head the Classics team after a successful 2020, which saw them win Omloop het Nieuwsblad and Gent-Wevelgem, respectively. The two Classics specialists are also scheduled for the Tour de France, where they will add strong support and target stage wins.
