For decades, we have known how to prevent traffic crashes in this country. We’ve watched other countries make incredible progress towards this goal, but we have lacked the leadership to prioritize roadway safety in the United States. We have a new Administration and a President who has experienced the tragedy firsthand. Now is the time to commit to completely eliminating the nearly 40,000 roadway deaths each year by 2050.
As many of you know, Joe Biden suffered a tragic loss due to a crash. His wife Neilia and their 13-month-old daughter Naomi were killed in 1972. Biden’s election presents an unprecedented opportunity for federal transportation policy. As the faces of traffic violence, Families for Safe Streets members must take advantage of this moment.
Together, we can ensure that early in his administration, President Biden sets a national goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2050. We have joined forces with several major national organizations, including the Road to Zero Coalition, the Vision Zero Network, and Toward Zero Deaths and have an important opportunity to make a change!

Special days like Valentine’s Day often trigger powerful emotions and memories for anyone who has lost a loved one or suffered a serious injury in a crash, regardless of how much time has passed. Valentine’s Day can feel particularly cruel because it is a day to celebrate love, and as a society, we have embraced the day to celebrate the love we feel for our parents, children, spouses, grandparents, siblings, and other family and friends. The day can bring up the pangs of grief because someone we love is now missing from this celebration or because we are no longer the person we were before our injuries in a crash.
