The course that for decades defined SoCal cross-country bike racing
finds new life with Quick n Dirty MTB and Mazda as presenting sponsor
Mazda Quick n Dirty today announced it is reprising the Sagebrush Safari mountain-bike race on March 24 and March 25. The course, popularized in the late ‘80s and annually contested until several years ago, will be cleared for cross-country and super-D racers alike. Amenities are also in-store for families, friends and fans during the days, and in the evenings for campers.
“Masses of riders wanted this classic race back, so we have been hard at work laying-out the course, negotiating usage, doing course work, and tightening up a whole lot of loose rocks,” said Victor Sheldon, Quick n Dirty race director. “We have come up with a course that upholds the legacy of the Sagebrush Safari.”
The cross-country course is 26 miles long with 3,600 feet of climbing. A more modest 18-mile course is being provided to Beginner-class racers. A Super-D race is scheduled on day two of the event, giving downhill racers and fans a faster-paced event at this modern classic cycling event.
The 26-mile cross-country divisions include age-bracketed Men’s and Women’s Expert, Sport and Beginner categories. Non-traditional categories will also be contested, included Masochist (single-speeders, 16-plus), Big-Boned (200 lbs.-plus), 55-plus Men’s/Women’s Open, and Vintage (1996 and older bikes, 16-plus) divisions. Super-D categories include age-bracketed Men’s and Women’s Expert, Sport and Beginner divisions, and a Schoolboy (girls and boys, 12 to 15) division. A full listing of categories and race details is posted at http://www.quickndirtymtb.com/sagebrush_safari.html.
Food vendors will be on-site during the days, and overnight boondocking (dry camping) is available at $10 per night.
Cross-country racing kicks-off on March 24 with the 18-mile Beginner flight at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 26-mile Intermediate and Expert start 9:15 a.m. A children’s ride is scheduled thereafter. The Super-D race will commence at 9 a.m. on March 25, with up to 150 contestants.
The race start and finish is near 28880 Corral Canyon Trail, Campo, CA 91906. This physical address is further up Corral Canyon Trail, but will take visitors to the venue. (Patrons are advised to not go past the race site to the Navy’s Camp Morena facility, across the street from the venue.)
