Community Cycling Event Supporting Women’s Equity
Hosted by AAUW Redlands in collaboration with the Redlands Bicycle Classic and Cyclery USA, the event supports the AAUW’s mission to advance gender equity for women and girls through education, empowerment, and advocacy, including scholarships, STEM education programs, and leadership training.
The Untold Story of the Women’s Tour de France
Breakaway Femmes tells the untold story of the women’s Tour de France of the 1980s. For six groundbreaking years, these women raced over the same cobblestones, conquered the same mountains, and were cheered by the same throng of crowds as the men. These athletes delivered unforgettable underdog victories, fierce rivalries, and remarkable feats of courage while confronting discrimination, financial hardship, injuries, and the emerging doping culture. More than three decades later, the women reflect on what they lost, what they gained, and the enduring bond of sisterhood that shaped their lives.
Special Guest Speaker: Former U.S. Women’s Tour de France Cyclist
The film will be introduced by Patty Peoples, a member of the 1984 U.S. Women’s Tour de France team and a featured athlete in the documentary. Peoples will provide insight into race structure and team dynamics to help audiences better understand the context of the film.

Post-Film Q&A with Professional Women’s Cyclist
Following the screening, Peoples will return to the stage for a moderated conversation with an interviewer, answering pre-submitted questions about her experiences competing at the highest level of international cycling and participating in the making of the film.
Celebrating the Legacy of Women in Professional Cycling
“This film gives long-overdue recognition to women whose achievements helped shape the future of professional sports,” said Amy Bisek, Co-president of AAUW Redlands. “In a community that celebrates cycling and women, their stories resonate in a particularly powerful way.”
