The Jerseys
Just like other prestigious stage races like the Tour de France, the jersey color of the team leaders in Tour de Suisse will be yellow. This is the rider with the lowest overall time. Other colors are a bit different from the normal. For the point leaders, the male wears black and the female red. The classic white jersey is reserved for the best young rider who is aged 25 or under.
Rich History
Tour de Suisse, or as referred in English, Tour of Switzerland, was first held in 1933. The race had 5 stages that started and ended in Zurich, which were normally held in September or August. In the 1950s, June was established as the calendar month of the event, which has remained so ever since.
The early editions of the event were normally dominated by home riders such as Hugo Koblet and Ferdi Kübler. However, as from the 70s, the event became competitive, with the last time a Swiss won the race being in 2009. Last year’s winner was Adam Yates from Great Britain for the men’s race and Demi Vollering from the Netherlands for the women’s race.
Recently, the team Ineos Grenadiers won three editions in a row from 2019 to 2022, with Geraint Thomas taking the overall victory in 2022. Tour de Suisse is becoming increasingly competitive because most pro teams and riders use it as a tune-up for the Tour de France. Watch out for the performing teams and riders on Betway as they prepare for the French tournament.
The Hardest Milestone for Riders
The most eagerly awaited stage of the race will be stage 5 in La Punt-Santa Maria, Calanca. This is the queen stage of this edition, covering 184.5 kilometers of relentless climbs of over 3,500 meters of elevation. There will also be two Alpine passes that are above 2000 meters. Riders are in for a tough race as they tackle the dreaded Julierpass and the legendary San Bernardino Pass in this endless but fascinating climb.
Final Thoughts
Summer is normally filled with great outdoor events, and the Tour de Suisse cycling tournament is among them. This year’s edition is expected to be very competitive as teams and individual riders want to set new records in preparation for the Tour de France.
