The Anatomy of a Crash
5/29/06 - Photographer Steve Cohen sent over a series of images from a crash at the Barry Wolfe Grand Prix. One of those pesky hay bails got in the way and caused a domino effect with bodies flying everywhere. I am just glad the guy in the red that endo'd was smart enough to use his arm for some face protection. Hopefully everyone is okay!

La Vuelta de Bisbee & Tour of the Gila Race Reports -By Dan Vinson
5/25/06 - Ready or not, time for a road trip!! The year's second (of three) racing blocks for me started well enough including the L.A. County Cycling Classic and Conquer the Canyons Stage Race, but catching bronchitis slowed me down a bit afterwards. I was put on antibiotics just before leaving for La Vuelta de Bisbee and Tour of the Gila - two high altitude climbing stage races that you typically don't want to tackle with anything less than excellent form. However, like many cyclists, I pressed on and went anyway. I would be doing 9 difficult races during an arduous 10 day period. Happy travels! If, of course, you can call groveling up a climb at 7500 feet elevation "happy"? more >

The Aram Chronicles: Track and Metro Edition
5/24/06 - Thought this was cool from our reader Aram's blog. Hopefully this will encourage more riders to try the track and maybe even take the MetroLink.

Opened up the SoCalCycling.com website for kicks. This event was listed for 3pm that day: "Carson Velodrome Indoor Track Series". I looked behind me, at my track bike, that I had not ridden in at least two months. It looked good. It always does. So I got my gear together, switched the pedals over from my road bike, opened up metro.net and found that I could get to within 2 miles of the indoor velodrome taking the Metro. I'd never done it before, but hey, spontaneousness, it's how I go. Stuff my backpack full of crap, with flip flops I gently ride the track bike downhill to the metro stop, and done. Switched trains in downtown, and got to Carson and rode about 15 minutes, and I was right there! With time to spare, for once! I've never raced on the track before. Only trained on it. more >

Erin Mirabella Receives Jack Kelly Fair Play Award
5/23/06 - U.S. Olympic cyclist Erin Mirabella (Woodland Park, Colo.) was named the recipient of the United States Olympic Committee's (USOC) Jack Kelly Fair Play Award for 2005.  Established in 1985, and named for the late USOC President John (Jack) Kelly Jr., the award is presented to an athlete, coach or official for an outstanding act of fair play or sportsmanship displayed during the past year. "This is a real honor to be selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee and by a committee of my peers," said Mirabella.  "As much as I and every other athlete would like to win a medal at the Olympic Games, the Olympics are a lot more than that.  Fair play and being a good sportsman is really what matters." more >

Neben Keeps Lead and Wins the Tour de l'Aude
5/22/06 - Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (T-Mobile) took out the final stage of Tour de l'Aude today in another two-person breakaway that stayed away for most of the race. Adrie Visser (AA Drink) and Teutenberg went away shortly into the race and continually increased their gap until the finish, over two categorized mountain sprints and into the finishing town of Limoux where Tour de l'Aude traditionally finishes. Controlling the rest of the bunch was the Buitenpoort Flexpoint team with Amber Neben finishing safely in the front chase group to win the tour overall for the second year running. more >

Amber Neben Takes Lead in Tour de l'Aude
5/21/06 - Defending Tour de l'Aude champion Amber Neben, of Irvine, and her Buitenpoort Flexpoint teammate Susanne Ljungskog got away on the first climb of the day and stayed off the front together until the finish. Ljungskog won the stage and Neben moved into the leader's jersey. There is just one stage remaining.

What Do You Think?

Should Altitude Tents be placed on WADA's 2007 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods?
Yes, it is similar to taking EPO.
Yes, not everyone can afford one, so the playing field is not level.
No, there is nothing wrong with it.
No, an altitude tent is the best way to avoid breathing smoggy air.

What Do You Think?

Should the State Championships have a 4.0 points multiplier in the SoCal Cup?
Yes.
It should be worth more than normal, but not that high.
The points should stay the same as non-championship events.
I'll be doing a training ride those days, so don't care.

Women's Cycling Challenge - Kick Off Weekend
By Heather Rose, Paramount Racing - Cat 3 & 4 Team
5/10/06 - What a great kick-off weekend for the Women's Cycling Challenge: the SoCal/Nevada Criterium Championship at Barrio Logan, a great road race course at San Luis Rey, and perfect racing weather! I was neither hot nor cold at any point during either race, how often does that happen? more >

Sydor and Kabush win the Pro Short Track at the Fontana NORBA
5/8/06 - Yesterday we headed out to Fontucky to check out the NORBA Nationals at Southridge and spread the word about the Mountain Bike Schedule on SoCalCycling.com. It was a nice venue that was easy to get to for a NORBA National and a little easier on the gas tank than going up to Big Bear. We watched the Pro Women and Men's Short Track races, which were fast, exciting, and included thirty minutes of lung searing pain. The course went up the Mountain Cross course, so there were berms and double jumps that the riders climbed up, with a short technical downhill and a long flat section. It was amazing how fast they went up the climb. In the end, former roadie Alison Sydor (Rocky Mountain) and Geoff Kabush (Maxxis) each won their events.

Barrio Logan Grand Prix - By Nate Deibler, SoCalCycling.com Team
5/9/06 - “This course is perfect for a break to stay away, because it's easier for a small group to maneuver through all the turns than the peloton.” I kept what my SoCalCycling.com teammate, Anthony Morrow said to me before the race in mind as we started the 80 minute State Championship race. more >

Kabush, Vanlandingham Ride to Side-By-Side Wins in Fontana NORBA
5/7/06 - Credit Fontana with a first in the history of the NORBA National Mountain Bike Series: Defending cross-country champions Geoff Kabush (Maxxis) and Shonny Vanlandingham (Luna) coasted across the finish line side by side to win the first round of the 2006 series. more >

Mountain Bike Update: Southridge this Week and Mammoth Cancelled
5/2/06 - The USA Cycling MTB National Championships, scheduled July 20- 23 in Mammoth, has been canceled due to too much snow. A new race venue is being determined for these same dates. In addition, the Norba Mountain Bike Series takes place this week, May 5-7, in Southridge Park, Fontana. Or, as we like to say, Fontucky. This should be a great event to ride in or watch. For more info, check out the Southridge Schedule or visit our Mountain Bike Schedule.

How does the high cost of gas effect your racing?
It doesn't. I'll keep going to all of the races.
I will go to less races.
I will car pool.
I'll just ride my bike to the races.
I will siphon gas from someone elses car, so I can fill my tank.
