Founded by John Russell and Matt Wenger in 2009, this event has been a dream come true for cycling enthusiasts of all levels in Orange County. Known for its inclusive nature and wholesome family vibe, Over the Hump attracts participants from across Southern California, including families, men, women, and youth of all ages.
Embracing Downhill Passion: New Addition – Dual Slalom
According to co-founder Wenger, “Over the Hump is a family bike party, that happens to be a race.” This year, they’re introducing a new discipline: Dual Slalom. With the cycling community leaning towards downhill pursuits, Dual Slalom is the perfect addition for enthusiasts seeking an adrenaline rush. The course is designed to be rideable for all, providing a challenge for each racer to set their best times.
The Thrill of Dual Slalom Racing
Get ready for head-to-head racing action! In Dual Slalom, two racers line up at the start gate, racing parallel courses with berms and jumps. Racers compete in two runs, collecting a cumulative race time, and the winner advances to the next round. Slalom race classes on Saturday include: Expert Women, Sport Women, Expert Men, and Sport Men.
Event Details and Family Fun
The event kicks off at 8:00 AM on Saturday, January 13, with Cross Country races starting at 9:30 AM. Kids aged 0-5 can enjoy a free exhibition race, and all kids will be treated to various free activities, including a bounce house, climbing wall, and face painting. The lively Expo Area features food trucks, Docent Brewing, and sponsors like Mazda, Simple Green, Specialized, Giant, Kawasaki, Cannondale, Intense, Rig’d Supply, Bike911.com, local businesses, and bike shops, among others.
