San Rafael Sunset Criterium Postponed Until 2021

Part carnival, part madhouse, part Thunderdome, the Toyota San Rafael Sunset Criterium held annually on the last Saturday in July will not take place as originally scheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The annual event featuring amateur and pro cyclists racing through Downtown San Rafael amidst the deafening sounds of spectators and cowbells will have to wait another year to ensure rider and spectator safety. The criterium has always drawn huge crowds which makes it a premiere event for cyclists to compete, but also a concern with the current pandemic and local and state guidance.

Representatives from Mike’s Bikes, the event producer, said “We are extremely appreciative of the sponsors who offered their support earlier this year to support the event, but in consultation with our sponsors, partners, riders, and host city, we will be postponing until 2021. We are in full support of local and state guidelines that are in effect and safety for our participants and fans is always our first priority.”

This year’s event also would have been the West Coast stop for the USA CRITS Series. “We look forward to bringing #theshow back to San Rafael in 2021 and appreciate all the partners that help make this event one of the longest standing in the Series” said Scott Morris, USA CRITS Development Director.

The San Rafael Sunset Criterium and Mike’s Bikes thank the City of San Rafael, USA CRITS, and all of our sponsors and participants for making the downtown criterium what it is today. Hang on to your cowbells and get ready to make some noise in 2021.
