A Brief History of Il Lombardia
The Giro di Lombardia/Tour of Lombardia/Il Lombardia has been held every year since 1905. Since debuting more than a century ago, it has earned the nickname “Classica Delle Foglie Morte,” which translates to “Race of the Falling Leaves.” The course used for the Il Lombardia is traditionally very treacherous, as it features its fair share of cycling at higher altitudes. It includes the famous Madonna del Ghisallo climb near the end of its usual route. Il Lombardia is widely regarded as one of the top one-day events in the cycling universe.
The Date for Il Lombardia 2024
Unlike other cycling events that play out over many days and sometimes even weeks, Il Lombardia takes place over a single day each year. Il Lombardia 2024 is currently scheduled to occur on Saturday, October 12. The fact that this event is only one day long plays into all the excitement that surrounds it.
The Il Lombardia 2024 Route
The original Il Lombardia route both started and ended in Milan, and it didn’t feature as many inclines and declines as it does today. Like other recent Il Lombardia races, this year’s event will start in Como and conclude in Bergamo. The route is 241 km, and it continues to feature some of the toughest climbs cyclists will ever face. It also boasts plenty of beautiful Italian scenery, which is a big part of why this race is so beloved by cyclists and cycling fans alike.
The Il Lombardia 2024 Cyclists
Tadej Pogačar will obviously be the top cyclist to watch during the Il Lombardia in 2024. He has the opportunity to further cement himself as one of the best cyclists to ever participate in the event. But winning for a fourth straight year won’t be easy. This year’s Il Lombardia will include 25 teams and some excellent cyclists, such as Andrea Bagioli and Primoz Roglic.
Still, it’ll be tough for anyone to unseat Pogačar, as he’s on a tear right now. He’s currently leading the pack at the 2024 Tour de France, and he could enter the Il Lombardia riding yet another big wave of momentum.
