SoCal Juniors Earn Titles at Juniors Track Nationals

7/9/11 – National titles of the 2011 Richardson Bike Mart USA Cycling Juniors Track National Championships, including the first-ever junior omnium titles, were awarded on Thursday as the event opened in over 100 degree temperatures. In all, over 140 of the nation’s top track cyclists will be competing for the Stars-and-Stripes in eight events across four age divisions at the Superdrome in Frisco, Texas this week.

After omnium qualifying on Wednesday and a long morning session, near record high temperatures forced organizers to push the event’s evening session back to a 7p.m. start. Friday and Saturday’s evening sessions will also be delayed to begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday’s session is now slated to begin at 8 a.m.

Mathew Lipscomb (Decatur, Ga./Greenville Spinners Bicycle Club/Hincapie Development team) and Kate Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif./CPT-Connie Cycling Junior Racing Team) earned USA Cycling’s first-ever junior omnium national titles after contesting shortened versions of the points race, elimination race, the flying lap, individual pursuit, scratch race and time trial over the past two days. The pair also posted national records in Wednesday’s flying lap; Lipscomb with a 14.392 and Wilson 16.842.  Lipscomb scored only six points, the minimum possible in this event won by the lowest points gatherer, winning each of the six omnium events. Wilson just missed the sweep, winning five of six events as silver-medal winner Kaitlyn Lawrence (Emmaus, Pa./Genesee Valley Cycling Club-MVP Health Care Cycling) was able to top her by approximately half a second in the  time trial.

Gregory Daniel (Englewood, Colo./Chipotle Junior Development Team) was able to overcome Lipscomb, who also contested the evening’s individual pursuit, with a 03:34.2. Addyson Albershardt’s (Matthews, N.C./Now Cycling-NOW and Novartis for MS) time of 02:40.7 helped her edge Kate Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif./CPT-Connie Cycling Junior Racing Team) by two seconds in the women’s three-kilometer event.

In what may have been the most impressive performance of the day, Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling-ProAirHFA) pulled off one of the best-ever kilo times at the Superdrome from a rider of any age at 01:05.6. Kaleb Koch (Glenview, IL/Nova Cycle Sports Foundation Inc./ISCorp Cycling Team) earned the silver with a 01:08.4, just ahead of a busy Lipscomb. Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif./Adams Avenue Bicycles-G S Adams Avenue Bicycles), a multi-time national champion in the 15-16 division moved up to 17-18 and promptly earned another Stars-and-Stripes in the 500-meter time trial at 38.226.

In addition to the six national titles awarded to competitors in the men’s and women’s 17-18 age categories, cyclists in three additional age groups (10-12, 13-14, and 15-16) took the track to compete for six titles. Zachary Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix-RBM) and multi-time title-holder Tara McCormick (Long Beach, Calif./Team TIBCO II) won the 15-16 sprint contests. Chazmichael Morales (El Segundo, Calif./Cycles Veloce-Team Simple Green/Bike Religion) scored a 37.119 to win the men’s 13-14 500-meter time trial, while Hannah McDade (Tigard, Ore./Beaverton Bicycle Club) finished atop the women’s event. Jules Gilliam (Manhattan Beach, Calif./CPT-Connie Cycling Junior Racing Team) won the 10-12 men’s category of the TT and Summer Moak (Katy, Texas/Team Spincycle) the women’s.

Team Pursuit, Points Race and Sprint titles highlight day two

The 17-18 men’s and women’s points race and sprint championship contests also headlined off another hot, central Texas day where six national titles were awarded along with scratch race competition championships in younger age divisions.

The men’s and women’s 17-18 points race capped off a quick morning session with Andrew Lanier Jr. (Gilroy, Calif./Team Specialized Racing) and William Rader (Dallas, TX /Metro Volkswagen-FCS Cycling Team) lapping the field not once, but twice to take home gold and silver in the men’s event. In the women’s event Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif./Adams Avenue Bicycles/) grabbed her second title of the week, just holding off Wilson from her third.

Yesterday’s kilo winner Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling-ProAirHFA) pulled off another impressive victory, edging Kaleb Koch (Glenview, Ill./Nova Cycle Sports Foundation Inc.-ISCorp Cycling Team) for the men’s sprint title as Valente racked up another in the women’s event, this time over a surging Chloe Chepigin (Chappaqua, N.Y./Young Medalists-Team Rothrock).
