12/29/06 - Unfortunately, the battle royale between Floyd Landis and Lance Armstrong on knobbies will not take place next summer at the Leadville 100 since Armstrong has withdrawn due to a scheduling conflict. The seven time Tour de France winner and player can't always get what he wants. Newly single Jennifer Aniston turned Lance down for a date because of her friendship with his ex-fiancé, Sheryl Crow. He should have known better on that one.

Ring in 2007 with a New Years Day Ride
12/28/06 - It's that time of year again where cyclists get to start the year off right with a ride among cycling friends. In the case of the Long Beach New Year's Ride, you will be among 400 or so friends, as the ride picks up groups of cyclists along the way on PCH. If you'd rather do some climbing, then check out the 37th Annual Mt Wilson New Years Ride for a little jaunt up to some thin air to the 5700' summit. What better way to get rid of a hangover!

Southern Nevada Stage Race Gets Road Season Under Way
12/27/06 - The first stage race of the 2007 calendar will be the Southern Nevada Stage Race, formerly know as Nelsons Landing. The SNSR utilizes a new 6 mile road race circuit which climbs 775‚ per lap. The road race was changed due to the growth of this event and the tight nature of the course. The road course is located in the beautiful Anthem, Sun City residential area of Henderson which is located southeast of Las Vegas. The time trial course was changed back to the 20k Underground course formerly used in Nelsons Landing. This moderately flat course now offers something for everyone and is ideal for all aero equipment. The crit course will remain unchanged. There will be several time bonuses given during the crit which will keep the GC uncertain until very end. The scoring company has also been changed which will hopefully mean faster results. We hope with these changes, this event will grow into one of the premier regional stage races. For more information, go to www.southernnevadasr.com

Women's Cycling in the Spotlight
12/22/06 - Big kudos to VeloNews for showcasing American World Champions Kristen Armstrong (Time Trial), Sarah Hammer (Pursuit) and Jill Kinter (Four-Cross) on the cover of their VeloNews Awards issue. As a former pro women's cyclist and Team Director for several pro women's teams (Chevrolet /Klein won the VeloNews Award for Best North American Women's Team in '96), I still get excited when women receive recognition for their accomplishments in cycling. When it comes to bringing home medals at Worlds and the Olympics, the US has been able to count on the talent of the US women for decades. In other women's cycling news, WomensCycling.net has put together a 150 page magazine on the 2006 Women' Season, with over 700 photos and articles written by riders and managers for $12. I wish they had a magazine like this when I was racing. Now, if we could just talk Jim Rabdau into bringing back the Women's Challenge in Idaho!

This epic race could provide quite a show down. Perhaps Ullrich will sign on for the challenge too for a battle royale? In other news today that may help Floyd's case, a procedural error by the laboratory that tested samples from Tour de France winner Floyd Landis stopped Spain's Inigo Landaluce from getting a drug ban.

LA Times Article - Presumed Guilty
12/11/06 - On Sundays, I like to ride, relax and read the LA Times. A picture of a swimmer on the front page caught my eye, then I looked at the headline, "Presumed Guilty - Athletes' Unbeatable Foe". As I read the article and turned the page there were pictures of Tyler Hamilton and Floyd Landis. The article is a two part story that was pretty interesting and touched on how the testing process for epo and blood doping are flawed and the contamination of over the counter vitamins. In the last few years, several riders that I raced against tested positive for nandrolone and their defense was that their vitamins were contaminated. If this is true, then that sucks, but I am a firm believer that you should know what you are putting in your body and if there is any doubt then don't ingest it. Today's Times article talks about how athletes see doping case appeals as a futile exercise, which Landis discussed on CyclingNews.com.

Lance Armstrong to Race in Leadville Trail 100
12/1/06 - Lance Armstrong is going to race competitively on two wheels once again, but this time it’s going to be on a mountain bike.“"The other bit of a challenge I want to do is a bit crazy,” said Armstrong, during the recent grand opening of the latest signature 24 Hour Fitness Lance Armstrong Sports Club in Austin, Texas. “It’s a mountain bike race in August held in Colorado called the Leadville 100. It’s about an eight to nine hour mountain bike race, mostly on single track that very few people do and even fewer finish.” The race involves more than 11,000 feet of climbing over the 100-mile course at altitudes between 9,500 and 12,600 feet. Armstrong’s interest in the race was sparked by his coach Chris Carmichael, who raced the Leadville 100 this year for the first time. In other Lance news, it appears that Lance has grown bored with Matthew McConaughey and was seen dining with Canadian Actress Estella Warren, a former synchronized swimmer.
