CrossFit Endurance Offers Fitness and Health Event in Orange County
10/31/10 -  Looking to do something new to cross train for cycling? On Saturday, November 13th, attendees of the Sports and Fitness Expo at the Orange County Marketplace will have an opportunity to erase old fitness habits and identify a program to help them reach their goals successfully. Hosted by CrossFit Endurance - a sports training program dedicated to improving performance, fitness and endurance sports potential – the free Expo will surprise athletes and Orange County residents alike, as it will boast the fittest people on the planet; a panel featuring the country’s leading CrossFit experts; a beer garden; competitions; shopping; and guest speakers.CrossFit Endurance gives individuals a full body workout faster and more efficiently than any other program, all while achieving improved results by challenging participants to get the most out of their workouts. “If you don’t perform, feel or look the way you want, CrossFit Endurance can provide positive results through our programming and community,” said Brian MacKenzie, Cofounder and Managing Partner of CrossFit Endurance. CrossFit Endurance may be new to many, however its strategies and methodologies stem from the same passion for health, fitness and athletic performance that has made its sister company, CrossFit, the fastest growing fitness movement worldwide. Unlike many programs, CrossFit Endurance alters its Workout of the Day, or a WOD as CrossFitters refer to it, to keep participants engaged and powerful. “Our goal is to show a path that has not been illuminated,” said Doug Katona, Cofounder and Managing Partner of CrossFit Endurance. “We are not for everyone…only for those who want to have a home in which they can grow both mentally and physically as an athlete to realize their chosen potential.” While CrossFit Endurance is not for the faint of heart, MacKenzie and Katona believe it transforms lives. The Expo will be open from 8 am to 4 pm and is located at 88 Fair Drive in Costa Mesa.

2012-2013 'Cross Nationals Move to Madison, Wisconsin with January Date
10/29/10 - USA Cycling announced Madison, Wisconsin as the host city for the 2012-2013 Cyclo-cross National Championships. The event will move from its traditional dates during the second week of December to the first week in January.  Although the United States has held its cyclo-cross national championships in December for a number of years, the move to January was proposed to better align the event with the international calendar. Additionally, the move will better support the U.S. athletes who are training to compete in the world championships slated for Louisville, Kentucky later in January. “To make sure this decision was in the best interest of our members, we distributed a survey to 2009 Cyclo-cross National Championship participants,” explained USA Cycling National Events Director Kelli Lusk. “When a large majority came back and said they would support moving the event to January, the decision was made to move the national championships to the UCI-designated weekend.” Because next season’s national championship will take place in January of 2012 and this season’s is scheduled for December of 2010, there will not be a cyclo-cross national championship event held during the 2011 calendar year.  Organized by the Madison Area Sports Commission and Team Sports Inc., the 2012 event will take place January 4-8 in Madison’s Badger Prairie/Reddan Park where warming tents and plenty of shelter will help ensure the warmth and safety of racers and spectators.

Horner and Rivera Cross Train with Cross Wins
10/26/10 - The long week of rains gave Southern California a dose of real cross racing this week with the 3rd Annual Spooky Cross event, round 5 of the SoCalCross Prestige Series presented by H2O Overdrive. As the skies darkened and the moisture filled the air, the course went from a sticky course of long straights and few technical sections, to a slick mess that challenged racers through the night. As the moon came out so did the freaks of the costume race, smoke machines, and hard-hitting action as elite racers were bouncing off the ground.
The elite women’s race saw the return of Coryn Rivera (Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty12) to the local seen this week as she has taken a little break from the bike after a long road season to recharge her batteries for cross. more >

NOW-MS Society Rides for the Cause... In Style
By Kendall Seyer
10/20/10 - Despite the dreary weather, NOW-MS Society riders came out en masse this weekend for the Bike MS Southern California ride through Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Phil Keoghan led the peloton on a 1910 Labor bicycle with all original parts except the tires. He rode the one-speed, 35-pound bike 100 miles including a climb over Casitas Pass, paying homage to Tour de France riders of a century ago. Even his shoes and saddle were authentic. He wanted to protect his famous noggin, so he modified his French cycling cap to fit a modern day helmet underneath. "It gave me the biggest head in the peloton," said Phil with a smile. Adding a few more chapters in cycling history, club members Ken Yamakoshi and Kevin Hinton took turns riding a Penny Farthing, and Ben Cornell was dressed as a rider from Breaking Away. The cycling club raised over $73,000, contributing to the nearly $800,000 raised so far this year by Bike MS Southern California participants.

Taberlay and Mann Win LA Cyclocross
10/19/10 - Finally, the temperatures decreased in Southern California to make for the first comfortable weekend of racing. The intimate setting of O’Melveny Park was good for a course with tree coverage and a good mix of conditions. The start held a gradual road climb to a tricky left turn onto a dirt, which then climbed up only to weave back to the grassy fields for some winding turns and more punchy climbs. The two tricky barrier sections did bring some good highlights to spectators but it all added up to a perfect weekend of racing CX in SoCal for all groups. The course seemed short and the deep grass seemed to keep the laps normal, but as it packed in it became considerably faster as the day went on. So, it should be noted that Men’s 45+ winner Bob Langin, Sr. was crushing it early on with a fastest lap time that would put him easily inside the top ten of the men’s elite field. more >

Nature Valley Pro Ride Gives Amateurs a Chance To Ride Against The Pros
10/15/10 – For the fourth straight year, amateur cyclists from around the United States will have the chance to compete against professionals at the Nature Valley Grand Prix through the Nature Valley Pro Ride. The official selection process to gain a spot on the men's and women's composite teams begins with entry into one of the Nature Valley Pro Ride events, which will be announced in January. To be considered for the Nature Valley Pro Ride, events can apply by December 1 at naturevalleyproride.com.  One rider who knows the path from Nature Valley Pro Ride amateur to professional is Alison Starnes. In 2008, the Mill Valley, Calif., resident was competing on the women's Nature Valley composite team. Two years later, the Team TIBCO/To the Top rider was donning the yellow leader's jersey after winning the prologue of the Nature Valley Grand Prix. “This was my first pro race,” Starnes said. “I had just upgraded from Category 4 earlier that year (in 2008), and the experience was a little traumatic. I just remember it was hard!” This year's Nature Valley Grand Prix is expected to take place June 15-19 in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. In 2011, it will again be one of the top events on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar (NRC).  Amateur racers (Category 1 men and Category 1 and 2 women) who qualify at a Nature Valley Pro Ride event receive a “battlefield promotion” that provides them free entry to the Nature Valley Grand Prix, travel stipends, team clothing, housing, ground transportation, and staff support for their composite team.

Taberlay and Sawicki Solo to Wins at Velocity Cross
10/13/10 - After the exciting and hot weekend of UCI racing in Southern California mother nature teased us this week with rain and lower temperatures but the race day temperatures again shot up to 95 degrees to make the racing blistering. This weekend was a great course laid out with a fast start leading into a winding course through baseball and soccer fields complete with a handful of mud bogs, a couple off camber slopes and the infamous H2O Overdrive -Velocity stairs that pushed riders to the test each lap.  The juniors came enforce as our fastest growing category in the sport (in large part to the SoCal High School MTB League). The most exciting finish of the day was the Youth Race (under 10) where these young athletes (most competitive by the way) rode one lap of the actual 1.75 mile cross course!  Brody and Ethan sprinted it out to the finish with Brody taking the win.  Both boys came over to do an interview and plan to work on their tactics for the next race watch out! In the elite women’s race, MTB Champion, Pua Sawicki came out to play, as she gets ready for La Ruta, a grueling mountain bike race in Costa Rica later this year. more >

Faithful Lieutenant Chechu Rubiera to Retire after Tour of Lombardy
10/13/10 - The Tour of Lombardy will be the last international race for Spanish rider José Luis “Chechu” Rubiera. After 16 years of professional cycling, the Asturian rider will retire. Rubiera, 37, always has been one of the strongholders of his teams. In 2000 he joined Johan Bruyneel's US Postal Service Team. Chechu Rubiera is best known for being Lance Armstrong's mountain lieutenant for five Tour de France victories, but has also achieved individual success with two stage victories in the Giro d’Italia, two top ten finishes in the Giro, as well as the Vuelta and he rode six times the Tour the France. He was also instrumental in the Tour of Spain victory of Alberto Contador in 2008.“ "I think it's time now to enjoy my family and spend more time at home”, explained Chechu Rubiera. “I consider myself very lucky to have had the good fortune to do what I liked best during all these years. I enjoyed and did my job to the best of my ability. I felt the love of many fans around me and I was proud to have such support with such a modest record. I hope that all fans will continue to enjoy cycling and that the difficult times we are undergoing now will soon be only a bad memory. Hasta pronto. We’ll meet on the road. I’ll remain a cyclist all my life.” Team Manager Johan Bruyneel commented, “I am proud to have worked with Chechu for ten years. We could always count on him as a Team Captain. His role was to guide the Team on the road and to share his experience with all young riders of our Team. I cannot count how many hours Chechu raced in the front of the peloton. They don’t make Chechu’s anymore. Also, off the bike he was important for the Team. He is the classiest guy I’ve ever met in cycling.” The last race for Chechu Rubiera will be the Criterium in Oviedo on October 30th.

Change of Plans, Interbike Returns to Vegas in September Instead of Anaheim
10/12/10 - In response to feedback to its announcement three weeks ago that it was moving the show to August in Anaheim for 2011, Interbike today announced the 2011 edition of the show will stay in Las Vegas and will be held September 12-16. "The announcement that we were moving the show dates and location elicited a very real response that surveys and discussions alone couldn't accomplish," said Andy Tompkins, Interbike show director. "Due to the overwhelmingly positive response to this year's show and the countless conversations we've personally had with exhibitors and retailers regarding the future dates and location of Interbike, we are reversing our earlier decision to move the 2011 show to Anaheim in August. We are hearing loud and clear that, at this time, the industry prefers September dates and the convenience of Las Vegas." The indoor portion of the show will be held September 14-16 at the Sands Convention Center, with the OutDoor Demo being held in Bootleg Canyon September 12-13. The 2012 show also will be held at the Sands in Las Vegas September 19-21 with the Demo September 17-18. The attention brought by news of moving the show to August allowed the entire industry to examine how it utilizes Interbike, what the show means to the marketplace, and helped solicit real and frank opinions from every sector of the industry. Based on this feedback and the success of Interbike 2010, the show will move back to September in Las Vegas. "Interbike has always been and will continue to be the industry's show," continued Tompkins. "We have heard the market's passion and commitment to this event and we want you to know that we are listening. We believe the new direction will best serve the current needs of the marketplace."

Bike Free - Bringing the Joy, Freedom and Fun of Bicycles to Military Kids
10/12/10 - Pedaling more than 5,000 miles from Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay to the California coast, bicyclists Paul Lebelle and Adam Burkowske have joined the movement to share the goodness of cycling with kids – specifically, the kids of our military families. They are finishing their trip down the California coast and will be in the San Diego area on October 12 for the Bike Free Food & Beer Benefit Event in La Jolla that Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Restaurant is hosting.  Chef Roy Yamaguchi and James Beard Award Winner & Anheuser Busch Master Brewer George Reisch will be there to celebrate the completion of our 5,000-mile cross-country bicycle journey!  Paul and Adam started Bike Free - www.bikefree.org, a non-profit charity, whose goal is to get 1,000 bikes and helmets to military kids. “The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken a heavy toll on kids growing up in military families.  Parents come back wounded or don’t come back atall. Kids are also facing parents’ multiple deployments,” says Adam.  “We know that being outside in the fresh air, sunshine, and having physical activity is not only good for your health, but also raises your spirit,” says Paul.  “Military kids are the forgotten victims of war.  Bringing the joy, freedom, and fun of riding a bicycle to these kids is what Bike Free is all about.” For more  info or to help support their mission, Paul and Adam can be contacted through the Bike Free website, bikefree.org.

NOW-MS Society Silent Auction Raises Thousands for the Cause
10/8/10 - On Sunday, October 3, members of the cycling community, friends and family gathered at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica for NOW-MS Society's first Wine Tasting and Silent Auction to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The evening was full of as much healthy competition as a local crit race as crowds lined up to bid on bottles of wine, hotel stays, a year of Direct TV service, a bike fit from Ron Petersen and many more incredible items and services. And with this competitive crowd, no evening would be complete without a bike race. The craziest Time Trial you've ever seen was hosted by Phil Keoghan, the club's title sponsor and host of CBS's Emmy Award winning series The Amazing Race. Racers included National Track Champion Danny Heeley and Bronze medalist Kit Karzen who came to the event direct from Elite Track Nationals in Carson. But the guys were no match for Elite racer Lauren Liscinski who won by a full second-- while wearing a dress! By the end of the night, the club had raised a few thousand dollars for the MS Society. NOW-MS Society wishes to thank all attendees, Chesebro Wines, California Pizza Kitchen and all those who very generously donated items and services for the auction.

UnitedHealthcare pb Maxxis Looks Ahead to 2011 as a Pro Continental Team
10/6/10 - The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis has officially concluded its 2010 racing season, and the Team can look back on its share of successes.
The Team's riders reached the podium 138 times this year, including 35 victories. Rory Sutherland also delivered the Team's best-ever performance at the Amgen Tour of California, finishing 7th overall and nearly pulling off the victory in the race's queen stage to Big Bear Lake. "The Amgen Tour of California has always been a priority for the Team," said Team Director Mike Tamayo. "The February date made it more difficult for us because riders like Rory really didn't find their peak form until May or June. With the move to May this year, you saw the benefits in Rory's performance. Next year we intend to improve on that performance with an even stronger squad." More >

Race Report: Focus Bicycles presents UCI Weekend – Kross-toberfest Day 2
10/5/10 - It turned out to be a stirring weekend of competition in California. It was more than just racing this weekend and Bonelli park, San Dimas, California, turned out to be a great venue for the UCI weekend of racing, bike swap, and more cycling advocacy events that promoter Dorothy Wong made happen. But, the racing was the fastest seen in Southern California cyclocross and exciting for fans and park goers to watch. And, it was possible because of the level of competition in town for the show. The stage had racers from four different countries in the elite fields and a handful of successful U23 talent who showed their talent this weekend. In the womens race, it was Teal Stetson-Lee (California Giant/Specialized) who looked powerful and confident, coming off her first elite win from day one of the Kross-toberfest event, as she led the women from the start on the newly routed course for the second day of racing. 10/4/10 - Twenty-one of mountain biking’s best riders threw down all they had while battling wild weather, but when the skies cleared it was Cameron Zink who took home the trifecta – the contest win, Utah Sports Commission Best Trick Award and the Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour season overall title.

Cameron Zink Comes Full Circle with Victory at Red Bull Rampage
World’s Best Freeride Mountain Bikers Ride the Storm in the Utah Desert
10/4/10 – With wild skies above him and 1,500 feet of vertical drop below, Cameron Zink persevered over the obstacles to become the 2010 Red Bull Rampage champion. Twenty-one of mountain biking’s best riders threw down all they had while battling wild weather, but when the skies cleared it was Zink who took home the trifecta –  the contest win, Utah Sports Commission Best Trick Award and the Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour season overall title.  After a season of highs and lows with big contest wins and tough injuries, Zink went through another roller coaster ride throughout the day. During his first run, Zink attempted a 360 off the Oakley Icon Sender custom feature, but took a hard hit that cracked his helmet and was unsure if he could do another run. Once the medics cleared him, he was energized to go again, only to be delayed a couple hours by gusty wind, rain and threatening clouds. But as the sun came out, Zink dug deep and threw down a perfect run that included a flawless 360 off the intimidating Oakley Icon Sender that sent him nearly 40 feet below. More >

Race Report: Focus Bicycles presents UCI Weekend – Kross-toberfest Day 1
10/3/10 - Humid temperatures and morning rains brought some signs of mud to Southern California (SoCal) for the first UCI double-header weekend they have seen in two years. The mud was literally a giant pit along with a mixture of heavy grass that required a lot of power from racers. Day one was fantastic bringing more than just exciting racing with a bike swap, morning trail run series, and other advocacy rides for cyclist. In the Elite Women's race, it was Devon Haskell (Bike Station Aptos) who was first from the long left curving road start and into the grassy fields of Kross-toberfest. In second it was previous SoCal resident, Carolyn Popovich (PAValleys.com). Popovich took the lead as Haskell crashed halfway through the first lap. More & Photos >

Out of 21 riders, 10 were selected to go on to the finals, where they'll face off against the 11 that pre-qualified from last year's event. It simply amazing to watch these riders tackle the dangerous natural ridges of Zion National Park.

New Breed of Athletes Attack Red Bull Rampage Course
Local rider Binggeli Leads Pack of Mountain Bikers Qualifying for Sunday’s Final
10/2/10 - After a month of digging, shoveling and shaping, the Red Bull Rampage course was primed and ready for action. Twenty-one of mountain biking’s up and coming athletes sent it down the picturesque Utah landscape, vying for 10 open spots in the event Finals. Riders from around the world from New Zealand to Spain to Canada dropped in, but it was a rider from just down the road that topped them all. On a dangerous network of ridges near Zion National Park, riders had free reign to navigate their descent between a designated starting gate and a finish line more than 1,000 vertical feet below. Utah resident Logan Binggeli qualified first with his confident and strong domination of the course.  He joins Alex Prochazka and Chris Van Dine who cruised their way into the top 3. They are also joined by slopestyle madman Andreu Lacondeguy of Spain, who took his wild style to the cliffs for the first time with a huge backflip off the step-up jump.
