Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif./OUCH Pro Cycling) claimed the gold medal in the women’s omnium on the final day of racing at the UCI Track World Cup final in London on Sunday.
Hammer was ranked fourth going into day two of omnium racing after Saturday saw her garner third-place in the flying lap, 9th in the points race, and 8th in the elimination race. On Sunday, the four-time world champ posted a third-place result in the individual pursuit, second in the scratch race, and a fifth-place finish in the 500-meter time trial to move her up to the number one spot.
Joining Sarah on the omnium podium was Annette Edmondson (AUS) with the silver medal and Laura Trott (GBR) with the bronze.
With her win on Sunday, Hammer is ranked second overall in the final omnium World Cup standings.
The fourth and final round of the World Cup served as an Olympic test event and was the first competition ever to be held in the new London Olympic Velodrome. USA Cycling sent a roster of twelve to race the four days, Feb. 16-19.
Earlier in the weekend, Hammer teamed up with Jennie Reed (Seattle, Wash./OUCH Pro Cycling), and Lauren Tamayo (Asheville, N.C./Exergy Twenty12) for the women’s team pursuit. The trio barely missed out on the medal rounds when they posted the fifth fastest time in Thursday’s qualification. Reed also competed in the individual pursuit for the U.S. and posted 12th-place in the event on Saturday. Bobby Lea (Topton, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling-ProAirHFA) was 16th overall in the men’s omnium after posting his top result of 10th-place in the flying lap.
Giddeon Massie (Cypress, Calif./Bike Religion), Michael Blatchford (Cypress, Calif./Project London 2012), and Kevin Mansker (Long Beach, Calif./Project London 2012) were 12th in the final men’s team sprint results with Massie following up with a 19th-place result in the men’s keirin. In the women’s team sprint, Madalyn Godby (Louisville, Colo./enCompass Racing) and Cristin Walker (Houston, Texas/Momentum Coaching Group p/b Atomic) teamed up for 17th place. Godby then rode to 34th place in the women’s sprint and Walker to 25th in the women’s keirin.
