After a 3 year absence due to the pandemic, the Celo Pacific cycling club was finally able to bring back the SLR CA State Road Race Championships on April 8th! The 35th edition of the San Luis Rey (SLR) Road Race was held in Bonsall in North San Diego County. The SLR Road Race hosted the SCNCA State Road Race Championships for Elite Pro/1/2, Cat 3, and Masters categories.
The SLR Road Race took place over multiple out-and-back laps of a 14-mile course with an undulating 400′ climb over the last 2 miles each lap.
Pro 1/2 Men’s Race
In the Pro 1/2 Men’s race, Conn MCDUNPHY (SoCalCycling.com Team), who just arrived from Ireland, soloed to victory. McDunphy described his race, “I attacked from the gun in a group of 3 but after an hour I was alone. I spent the vast majority of the 3.5hr race out front solo on a hilly hot course. I managed to pull out a 4 minute gap by the finish. A nice test ahead of the two big stage races coming.” Since McDunphy is from Ireland he was not eligible to win the Championship jersey.
Gavin HLADY (Team Mike’s Bikes powered by Equator Coffees Team) finished 3rd and clinched the SCNCA Road Race State Championship jersey.
Women’s 1-3 race
In the Women’s 1-3 race, Philine ENDRES (Incycle Team) won the SLR Road Race and the Cat 3 Women’s SCNCA Road Race State Championship jersey. Her teammate, Laurel RATHBUN (Incycle Team) earned the jersey in the Cat 1 Women’s title.
