If nothing else, cyclists know how to have fun. That’s evident if you’ve ever been to Spooky Kross at the Fairplex Stadium Complex in Pomona. Now in its sixth year, Spooky Kross is cycling’s most flamboyant and fun event of the year, appropriately Halloween-themed on Saturday, October 26.
Spooky Kross is one-half of L.A. Bike Fest weekend, one of the most popular venues in Southern California attracting as many as one-thousand cycling enthusiasts. “This is an exceptional opportunity for cyclists of all ages and skill levels to come out and experience a multi-faceted event combining the many disciplines of cyclocross riding,” commented Dorothy Wong, organizer of the Prestige Series for Southern California Cyclocross. “One weekend out of the year we transform the Fairplex horse racing track into a challenging cyclocross arena. We run 26 different races and events on Saturday from noon to 9:00pm beginning with community and family based activities including a haunted pumpkin bike maze for kids, a costumed cyclocross, a zombie ride and a 5:00pm fixed gear Criterium hosted by Mobbin’ Mondays in parking lot 9.”
Spooky Kross Weekend and Saturday’s Spooky Kross costume race for kids and adults benefits the Pomona Valley Bicycle Coalition, a chapter of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, and welcomes all bikes to participate for a nominal $5.00 donation which is tax deductible. At the conclusion of the Spooky Kross event, there will be a best-dressed costume podium celebration. There’s also a pumpkin carving contest on Saturday after the kids race. Bring your own pumpkin to carve or a pumpkin will be available for a nominal $5.00 donation. Spooky Kross is a full day of cycling fun plus concert/DJ entertainment, a ‘bike-in’ movie (showing the iconic “Mars Attacks” at 6:00pm followed by the cult classic, “Rocky Horror Picture Show” at 8:00pm) and a Velo carnivale.
Jenson USA, one of the nation’s largest Internet retailers of bicycles, parts and accessories, is this year’s presenting sponsor of Spooky Kross. Founder and CEO of Jenson USA, Michael Cachat remarked, “I can’t think of a better way for families to celebrate the Halloween holiday. Spooky Kross has activities that appeal to both children and adults. It’s everything that cycling is about, healthy exercise and a fun experience. As a company, Jenson USA is pleased to be a part of this great event and contribute to the promotion of cycling as a preferred lifestyle.”
On Sunday, October 27, L.A. Bike Fest continues at the Fairplex with 27 more events including a Krosstoberfest cyclocross, an emblem ‘little 500’ team relay race, a Spooky 6K run, a Spooky family ride, a kids bike rodeo, and a community Velo swap meet/expo.
