SoCal Juniors Wrap Track Nationals with More Titles
7/11/11 The final five national titles were divvied out Sunday morning at the Richardson Bike Mart USA Cycling Juniors Track National Championships. The 17-18 team sprint, Madison and 15-16 points races wrapped up competition at the Superdrome in Frisco, Texas.
Sunday morning started off as expected after the first pair went one-two in yesterday’s sprint, Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, PA/SUB 49), Kaleb Koch (Glenview, IL/SUB 49) 49.731 and Ryan Gadow (Dublin, CA/SUB 49) earned the comfortable victory in the men’s team sprint. The trio posted a 49.731, nearly five seconds better than the silver-medal trio of Michael Dessau (Boulder, CO/Chipotle Junior Development Team), Grahmm Smith (Pauls Valley, OK/Chipotle Junior Development Team) and Imari Miller (Fort Worth, TX/Chipotle Junior Development Team) who finished in 54.434.
It was quite the opposite in the women’s team pursuit however as favorites Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif.) and Tara McCormick (Long Beach, Calif.) suffered a false start and an untimely crash to remove themselves from contention and leave the door open for Payton Thomas (Grapevine, TX/Young Kenda Medalist) and Chloe Chepigin (Chappaqua, NY/Young Kenda Medalist) to take the title in 39.263.
Collin Berry (Huntington Beach, CA/NOW-MS p/b Chipotle) and Chandler Knop (Monumnet, CO/NOW-MS p/b Chipotle) took the title in a controlled men’s Madison event with 14 points. Andrew Lanier Jr (Gilroy, CA/Echelized) and Ben Barthel (Santa Barbara, CA/Echelized) scored nine to secure the silver.
Following three days of consistent competition Michael Dessau (Boulder, CO/Chipotle Junior Development Team) scored the win the 15-16 men’s points race to secure the omnium title. Gregory Ratzell (Blandon, PA/Young Medalists/ Team Rothrock) finished a close second in the points to secure his omnium silver medal just ahead of Zachary Carlson (Plano, TX/Matrix Cycling Club/Matrix-RBM) .
The 15-16 women’s points race top five nearly mirrored the omnium final sealing the overall victory for Tara McCormick (Long Beach, CA/Team TIBCO), just one point ahead of Nadia Latzgo (Fogelsville, PA/Young Medalists/-Team Rothrock), 22-23.
These national championships wrap up after five days of competition by over 140 of the nation’s top young track racers.
Throughout the national championships, winners of the men’s and women’s 17-18 individual events will challenge to earn start spots for the UCI Juniors Track World Championships in Moscow, Russia, August 17-24. For more information on these qualification procedures, including requirements for being a funded team member, please see the athlete nomination worksheet.
