Training: Top-10 Tips for Better Cycling Recovery
By Gary Tingley, USA Cycling L2 / Certified Power-based Training (CPBT) Coach
10/31/09 - Recovery is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of a well rounded training program for the competitive cyclist. Day and day out training, work, home, and life stresses can increase the fatigue that a rider experiences throughout the day, and can minimize the effectiveness of the workouts performed. To realize the most of your training program, effective recovery techniques can lessen the stresses of daily life and can help to prepare you for the next day's workout.
Compression clothing can help office workers, travelers, and those who spend considerable amounts of time standing throughout the day. Mid-day stretching and "sunshine breaks" can also assist with reducing stress in the workplace. A healthy diet and ample vitamin supplementation are important foundations for a sound training program. more >

Adventures in Cyclocross Racing, a Mountain Biker's Perspective
By Tim Vangilder, Troupe Racing Co.
10/29/09 - This is the time of year that the cyclocross circus comes to town. For a few years, we have wanted to check it out and give it a try. But each year, there are always big, end of the year xc races to focus on. Not this year. My cross debut was put on the calendar long ago, and I was looking forward to jumping in totally unprepared and naive to the weirdest form of bike racing. The event: SoCal Prestige Series Spooky Cross. Being totally new to this, I entered the mens category 4. I was racing on a hardtail mountain bike (my precious Rivette). The race was only 35 minutes long, and being well versed in 24 hour solo racing, I felt that I could manage myself for a measly 35 minutes. The race started, and everything was going good. I was able to move up from the back of the field of 65 riders up towards the front. And then, we hit the first stair step run-up, which was a mandatory dismount. Suddenly, my heart rate spiked, but I ran quickly up the steps and remounted the bike smoothly. more >

Team Type 1 Announces 2010 Pro Men’s Roster
10/28/09 - Team Type 1 will field a versatile roster sprinkled with international flavor and experience when it begins its third season as a men’s professional team in 2010. In 2009, Team Type 1 won 55 races, finished fourth in the National Racing Calendar (NRC) standings and captured the King of the Mountains title at five races, including the Tour of Missouri. In two seasons, the squad has registered 100 victories and 219 podium (top three) finishes. Team Type 1 is the world’s only professional cycling team with a roster that includes riders who have Type 1 diabetes. Established in 2004 by Phil Southerland and Joe Eldridge, the team strives to instill hope and inspiration for people around the world affected by diabetes. Southerland said the team’s previous success paves the way for an expanded racing calendar in 2010 that will include competition in North and South America, as well as Europe, Asia and Africa. Southerland said the support of sponsors and a strong group of riders has the team on target to achieve its long-term goal of competing in the Tour de France by 2012. “The notoriety Team Type 1 has garnered has allowed us to partner with great companies, as well as the International Diabetes Federation, with the goal of providing insulin to the 70,000 people in need of it around the world,” he said. Southerland will continue as the team’s Chief Executive Officer but not compete professionally after being sidelined much of the past two seasons by a leg injury. The second-year pro competed in the Amgen Tour of California in 2009 and was part of Team Type 1’s winning eight-person team in the Race Across America (RAAM) in 2006 and 2007. Team Type 1’s roster for 2010 includes a strong mix of veterans (Michael Creed, Valeriy Kobzarenko, Shawn Milne), sprinters (Eldridge, Ken Hanson and Aldo Ino Ilesic), stage racing specialists (Chris Jones and Davide Frattini), European talent (Javier Megias, Thomas Rabou and Martijn Verschoor) and an abundance of promising newcomers (Will Dugan, Alexey Shmidt, Thomas Soladay and Scott Stewart). Four of the 17 riders have Type 1 diabetes: Fabio Calabria, Eldridge, Megias and Verschoor. In addition to nine Americans, there are riders from Australia, Holland, Italy, Russia, Slovenia, Spain and the Ukraine. Vassili Davidenko returns for his second season as the team’s director sportif. He will be assisted by Michael Carter.

Southern California’s Prestige Series of Cyclocross - Spooky Cross Report
10/26/09 - There were more costumes around the venue before sundown than Target has stocked the first week of October. The racing was great all day but as it got dark the event went from stock to sick! Spooky Cross brought a record amount of riders to the Southern California Prestige series and a high profile group, current and legendary champions of cycling, motocross stars Johnny O’Mara and Ben Baustrom, Pro road rider Tony “The Count” Cruz, and from the world of Mountain Biking there were Ned Overend, Sid Taberlay, and Brian Lopes. The race was magical. While there seemed to be a lot of long straight sections the guys from Rock N’ Road along with the SoCalCross designers did a great job adding a wide variety of technical aspects to the course. For example, the longest sand section in a race, outside of the beach, which came into a sharp 180-degree turn and up into the dark and spooky forest. It was a great experience for riders and spectators alike as everyone enjoyed the tasty foods from the Green Truck run on veggie oil and the event was solar powered by Energy Efficiency Solar, music from DJ Echo Brown and three different bands kicking off with the Gruesome Twosome, the Rims and feature rock band: Kinkade. more >

10/25/10 Steve Miller, President of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah presented by Zions Bank, announced today the passing of Executive Director, Terry McGinnis, after a prolonged battle with cancer. “Terry was the heart and soul of the Tour and will be missed. McGinnis raced professionally for more than 20 years, spending 10 of those as an Elite Cat 1 cyclist. He was forced to retire in 2007 due to cancer. McGinnis continued to ride recreationally as his health allowed.

Garmin Extends Title Sponsorship of Team Garmin-Slipstream Through 2013
10/20/09 - Garmin Ltd, the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today that it has extended for an additional three years its title sponsorship of Team Garmin-Slipstream, the ProTour cycling team dedicated to ethical sporting and developing the next generation of cycling champions. The extension for the U.S.-based team comprised of elite talent from around the world is an addition to the company’s current sponsorship through 2010, marking one of the most significant multi-national sponsorship deals in the history of professional cycling. “The success of the team spans the globe and surpassed our expectations for the first year and a half of our title sponsorship, bringing Garmin’s reputation for quality, commitment, performance and productivity into countless households in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia,” said Jon Cassat, Garmin’s vice president of communications. “Our objectives were and continue to be to integrate our products on sports’ biggest stages and to build global brand awareness. Whether capturing victories around the world, winning national championships or working to develop future generations of talent, Team Garmin has helped us achieve those objectives and has made an impression on billions of potential customers.” The partnership, which will run through the end of 2013, will provide the team with the opportunity to continue its founding mission: building the next generation of cycling champions. It will also allow Garmin, Slipstream and their partners to develop new technology that will give the team advantages on the road. Most important, the long-term sponsorship provides the team with a platform and foundation for retaining and recruiting the best riders in the sport. “Since signing with Slipstream prior to the 2008 Tour de France, Garmin has seen an outpouring of support from cyclists and sports fans across the globe, along the roads of major tours and in the stores of our retail partners,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales.

Tips on Saving Money on Nutritional Products for Cycling
By Michael Lovegren, Kinetic Loop Training Systems
10/18/09 - During these harsh economic times endurance athletes are forced to find other alternatives to fuel their bodies from the traditional Powerbar, GU, Hammer, and other commonly used products. We all know that muscle glycogen is an important fuel source during most rides, whether easy or more intense and depending on your training intensity. Muscle glycogen can become significantly depleted in 75 to 90 minutes. As athletes train and race in these tough economic times it is hard to use the common products used by pro riders. What if I told you instead of spending $ 1 to $ 2 on a single gel or a bag of shot blocks you could purchase a box of General Mills fruit snacks or a bag of Fig Newtons. A great source to fuel your body for training and racing is cheaper than you think. If you would like to save a buck, which everyone wants to do these days, then you can try the following foods which can be purchased at your local grocery store: Fig Newton’s a box of Fig Newton’s with 15 servings ($ 1 - $ 2), General Mills Fruit Snacks - box contains 10 servings (contain 21-25 grams of carbohydrates) and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. There is no difference from a GU, Powerbar, or Hammer products compared to Fig Newton's, fruit snacks, and PB & J. The reason why most use these products is convenience. Would you rather spend 2 dollars on one gel or 2 dollars on a bag of Fig Newton’s or a box of Spider-Man fruit snacks? If you are not a sponsored rider and want to save money then try these useful tips and enjoy them.

Reactions to the 2010 Tour de France Course
Alberto Contador
"I like the course. It will be a better Tour for climbers than for rouleurs. Honestly I would have preferred a 10 K shorter time trial and a second one of 20 or 30 K, but I am really happy about the course. It will be a very difficult race to control in the first week, which is particularly difficult with the Paris-Roubaix cobblestones, but I don’t give it too much importance. The most important thing will be not to crash. I hope it will not rain there. The Alps stages will be less hard. The Pyrenees will be twice as hard as this year, especially with the double climb of the Tourmalet, one of them with a mountaintop finish. I will recognize those stages to know more about them."
Lance Armstrong
"I think it’s an interesting course. It starts exciting. The first few days will provide a lot of drama for people between the crosswinds in Holland and the hills in and around Brussels and Spa and then with of course the cobblestones when we first come into France. The cobbles themselves are dangerous but what is even more dangerous is the run into the cobblestones. The kilometers before, the nerves, the anticipation before, the positioning, that is the most dangerous part. You need obviously an all rounded team but I think you have to take some big guys who can definitely support you in that first week because with the cobble sections you have to be in the front. There will be only 60 K individual time trial but the only thing that is unfortunate for us, is that there will be no team time trial. The race will technically and tactically be much different than this year. You will have more guys who will be factors in the race because of the lack of the team time trial. In 2009 the TTT eliminated half of a dozen guys. I think the organizers like what they had this year with a summit finish so late in the race. It keeps things close, it keeps everybody guessing. It keeps the riders sharp too. The race will not be decided before the last three or four days. Two times on the Tourmalet is unique too. I like it. I will be close to 39 years old but the goal and ambition will be to try to win. I like to think that I will be better than last year but Alberto has shown that he is the best in his sport right now; he will be tough to beat."
Rolf Aldag, Columbia-HTC Manager
"0ur goal is to be competitive for the green jersey next July. It's the next logical step after Mark Cavendish won six stages this year and finished in Paris. Even more logical if you think about how he won that last stage on the Champs-Elysées."
California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Names Trips for Kids
10/13/09 - The California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports selected Trips for Kids (TFK) as its 2009 Non-Profit Organization of the Year from more than 700 nominees. As part of the award, Trips for Kids will receive a $10,000 donation at a special ceremony in San Rafael, Calif., on Nov. 19. "Trips for Kids is overjoyed to be the recipient of this prestigious award," said Marilyn Price, founding director of TFK. "Recognition from the Spotlight Awards will significantly boost our visibility and encourage more people to sign up as Trips for Kids chapters. The prize will really help us give underserved youth an opportunity to be active through our mountain bikes rides." The California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting physical activity for all Californians with an emphasis on children and youth. Anthem Blue Cross Foundation has granted more than $1.75 million to the Council over the last five years. Giant Inside Sales Rep Keith Ketterer Sets New Masters World Hour Record
10/12/09 - The day after setting a new Masters World Hour Record at the Home Depot Center velodrome in Carson, CA, Giant Bicycle Inside Sales Representative Keith Ketterer said he was, “a little sore, but totally psychedand so glad it’s done!”
Ketterer set a new World Hour Record in the 50-54 age group, riding 45.386 kilometers that’s 28.2015 miles in one hour. The old record was 44.890 kilometers, or 27.8933 miles.
The new record involved rocketing more than 180 laps around the velodrome at a pace that most professional bike riders including those much younger than the 53-year-old Ketterer would find impossible. “All my training leading up to the attempt was set for 20 seconds a lap for 180 laps,” Ketterer said. “On a 250-meter track that would be 45k which would break the record by just 100 meters. My strategy was to ride the first 120 laps at 20 seconds per lap - which is called a "schedule" and then slowly pick up the pace in the last 60 laps to put distance into the record.” more >

To hear him speak of his experiences, whether it be at the Tour de France or in the Applachians of North Carolina on a monsoon-like training ride, Bobke uses his humor, wit and downright outlandish style to capture any audience. Team Type 1’s Kerry White Takes on 24-Hour National Championships in Moab
10/9/09 - Team Type 1’s Kerry White is approaching this weekend’s USA Cycling 24-Hour Mountain Bike National Championships as a personal battle, rather than a competition against thousands of other racers. White will be the only member of Team Type 1’s Elite team competing in the race in Moab, Utah. The race that begins Saturday at noon will be run in conjunction with the 15th edition of the 24 Hours of Moab, one of the country’s most prestigious mountain bike races. The 39-year-old native of Sydney, Australia, who lives in Vail, Colo., finished third in the solo women’s division at Moab last year. “Last year, this race didn’t double as the national championship so I’m going to be significantly more humbled this year,” White said. “I do these races because I love to ride my bike. It is not really about results, winning or prestige. It is about challenging myself personally.” Since her diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 11, White has strived to spread the message that having diabetes should not put the brakes on your goals. In 2007, she was the only solo woman to finish the Race Across America (RAAM), completing the more than 3,000-mile race in 13 days. Twice, she has been a member of the winning four-woman team in RAAM. “We (people with Type 1 diabetes) know our bodies and having a strong mind dealing with this disease allows me to stay mentally strong throughout a race like this,” she said. “My blood sugar control during these races is usually the easy part. The before and after the race can be challenging, but if I eat right and stick to what works, it is usually very successful.”

BISSELL Pro Cycling Announces 2010 Roster
10/6/09 - The BISSELL Pro Cycling Team announces the signing of its first 10 riders for the 2010 season, including seven returning riders and three additions to the roster. Team manager Glen Mitchell and team director Eric Wohlberg will also continue in their roles for 2010. In 2009, BISSELL Pro Cycling captured the overall team classification wins at top U.S. races, the Tour of Gila, Joe Martin Stage Race, Mt. Hood and the Nature Valley Grand Prix. Ben Jacques-Maynes leads the team after another strong year after strong performances at the Tour of California, Nevada City and Tour of Missouri. Co-leader Frank Pipp will support Jacques-Maynes with his wealth of experience and ability to captain the riders -- a major part of the team’s success in 2009. New Zealand time trial champion, Jeremy Vennell and all-around powerhouse, Andy Jacques-Maynes, will also return and provide depth to the roster. New to the 2010 team is criterium strongman, Kyle Wamsley. Wamsley’s 2009 results include two top-five stage wins at the Tour of Missouri, as well as a stage win and the overall points jersey at the Redlands Classic. Returning rider, Paul Mach showed that he was a climber to contend with in 2009 his first year as a pro -- when he earned the overall win at the Mt. Hood Classic. Rounding out the roster are three riders who have demonstrated that they are the future of competitive cycling in this country. Cody O’Reilly will be returning to BISSELL after a great year of riding support for the team and is sure to have a bright future. New to the team in 2010 will be Daniel Holloway, who comes to BISSELL from the Felt-Holowesko-Garmin U23 Team. Holloway had wins both on U.S. and European soil this year and is also a respected track competitor, having achieved four first-place wins at the 2008 Elite Track Nationals. Newcomer David Williams will ride with the BISSELL Team in his first year as a professional cyclist. Williams has posted outstanding local results in Michigan, where he is currently the state time trial champion.

Team Sprint and Madison events wrap up Elite Track Nationals
10/5/09 - The 2009 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships concluded at the Home Depot Center velodrome on Sunday awarding national titles in the men’s and women’s team sprint and the men’s Madison. Nearly two dozen women also contested the inaugural women’s Madison, an exhibition event for 2009. In the men’s Madison, Cody O’Reilly (Bissell) and Iggy Silva (Iggy Racing) lapped the field inside the final few laps to beat Black Dog’s Ryan Luttrell (Black Dog Pro Cycling) and Ryan Sagba (Black Dog Pro Cycling), 8-4. The pairing of Shane Kline (Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Bobby Lea (OUCH p/b Maxxis) scored 25 points, but finished a lap down to place third. For O’Reilly the race wrapped up a successful week after winning the omnium and placing third in the points race, and for Silva the Stars-and Stripes marked his first as an elite. “I went over to Hasselt last February with USA Cycling’s development program and did some Madison racing,” explained the 19-year-old Silva. “The competition over there is a lot better, so it really prepared me for this race. Julian (Kyer), Cody and myself are headed back over in a few weeks as well. Madison racing has a lot going on and is very exciting so it’s one of my favorite events on either the road or the track.” More at USA Cycling >

New National Record Set for Women’s Team Pursuit
10/2/09 - The 2009 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships continued at the Home Depot Center velodrome on Thursday with the women’s team pursuit national record falling, young stars showing flashes of greatness in the men’s team pursuit, an Olympian re-gaining his national title in the kilo and scratch race champions crowned. In all eight Stars-and-Stripes were awarded on the second day of competition. As expected the women’s team pursuit race turned out to be one of the highlights of the evening’s competition as the trio of former pursuit world champion Sarah Hammer (Temecula), Dotsie Bausch (Irvine) and former junior world championship pursuit medalist Kimberly Geist (Emmaus, Pa.) worked together to set a new national record with a time of 3:34.114. Riding for the Empower Coaching Systems squad the trio virtually bested their own mark of 3:34.783 set at this event in 2007 when Hammer and Bausch teamed up with keirin world champion Jennie Reed (Kirkland, WA). Another powerhouse women’s team, the Proman Hit Squad of Higgins, Christen King (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Shelley Olds (Los Gatos, CA) earned the silver with a time of 3:41.165. The Trek-Livestrong squad of Taylor Phinney (Boulder, CO), Ian Moir (Long Beach), Julian Kyer (Boulder, CO) and Justin Williams (Los Angeles) dominated the men’s team pursuit contest taking the Stars-and-Stripes by nearly 10 seconds. With a time of 4:25.83, such a dominant performance by a group of young men all under the age of 21 bodes well for the future of American track cycling. More at USA Cycling >
