PeopleForBikes has announced an industrywide electric bicycle battery recycling program, powered by Call2Recycle, targeted at suppliers, retailers and consumers to make sure all electric bicycle batteries end up properly recycled and out of landfills.
Jenn Dice, PeopleForBikes President + CEO explained:
This program represents the bicycle industry becoming the first transportation sector united under one battery recycling solution. We know that bikes help combat climate change, but like all manufacturing, our industry has an impact, especially with millions of new batteries powering the recent surge in electric bicycle sales. Our vision is for the U.S. bike industry to become a global leader in battery recycling, climate action and more. This program takes a big, proactive step towards achieving that vision.
Our goal at PeopleForBikes is to make it as easy as possible for you, your company and your customers to take part in this program and create a cleaner and healthier tomorrow.
I want to sincerely thank the more than 40 bike industry volunteer leaders from 20 PeopleForBikes member companies who united under PeopleForBikes’ sustainability task force and electric bicycle committee to create this program. This complex program started with casual conversations among committee board members and is the result of thousands of hours of subsequent industry and staff legal work. It aims to address the environmental concerns associated with lithium-ion battery recycling and ensure that batteries at their end of life, or those that are damaged or defective, are easily and safely handled and returned to the proper recycling stream.
The program will also help riders celebrate milestones, like when their electric bicycle becomes carbon neutral and when it’s time to recycle their battery, as well as showing them great places to ride their bike along the way.
This is a major landmark event. We as an industry have a responsibility to lead the way on sustainability and climate issues, and battery safety and recycling play a big role in those efforts. We also know that we can accomplish a lot more, a lot faster, by doing this work together. We are excited to collaborate with Call2Recycle and the rest of the bike industry to take such a monumental step towards a more sustainable future.
