Celebrating a Milestone Event

On Sunday, February 25; between 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. CicLAvia will celebrate its 50th car-free open streets event since 2010 of catalyzing vibrant public spaces, active transportation and good health through car-free streets with CicLAvia Melrose.

CicLAvia – Melrose Route

CicLAvia – Melrose connects Fairfax and Vermont Avenues, welcoming everyone of all ages and abilities to enjoy this 4-mile pop-up park for the day with one’s favorite people-powered way, whether that’s walking, jogging, biking, roller skating, skating, or simply spectating. Always free, CicLAvia participants just show up anywhere along the route at any time to enjoy the open streets and to take the time to explore the Melrose corridor.

2024 CicLAvia Schedule

The entire 2024 CicLAvia schedule will be announced soon.

“CicLAvia shows us what is possible in L.A. when we come together, and achieving this milestone of our 50th event is remarkable,” said CicLAvia Executive Director Romel Pascual. “In 2024, we will be building on the 2023 momentum with more events, expanded neighborhoods, new twists on previous routes, and more innovations such as the CicLAminis and CicLAvia Explore events. All will be in celebration of CicLAvia’s mission to support open streets, catalyze public spaces, and engage with people to transform our relationship with our communities and with each other.”

Three Hubs Along the Route

CicLAvia – Melrose includes three (3) Hubs filled with plenty of activities and programs along the route, Hubs are walking zones (mandatory bike dismounts) and meeting points along the route with the Fairfax Hub located on Melrose east of Fairfax Ave; Melrose Hub located on Melrose near Gower St; and the Vermont Hub located on Melrose west of Vermont Ave. Hubs offer family-friendly activities, restrooms, free water refilling stations, free basic bike repair, bike parking, and first aid. Free pedicab rides sponsored by AARP are available at each information booth. Check out the specials, deals, and discounts along the route here:

Inspiration from Bogotá’s Ciclovía

Inspired by Bogotá’s weekly ciclovía, which celebrates its 50th year anniversary in 2024, CicLAvia has been temporarily closing streets to car traffic and opening them as public parks in Los Angeles since 2010. CicLAvia car-free streets connect all of us to the neighborhoods where we live, work, shop, learn, and play. Active participants at CicLAvia use people-powered mobility to navigate public streets in a safe and joyful way. Along the way there is shopping at local businesses, access to cultural and architectural gems, using open streets as spaces to connect with each other, and making a positive impact on the environment by creating a more sustainable and climate resilient city and region. Over the past 13-plus years CicLAvia has helped communities re-imagine a greener and cleaner Los Angeles, while also promoting equitable transportation options, healthier lifestyles, and closer connections to community.

CicLAvia’s Impact on Los Angeles

Over the last year, tens of thousands of Angelenos had the chance to stroll, jog, skate, and cycle through neighborhoods like Boyle Heights, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Mid City, North Hollywood, Pico Union, Canoga Park, Winnetka, Reseda, South LA, and Watts—over the course of seven CicLAvia open street events. CicLAvia could not have had such a successful year without amazing supporters, dedicated volunteers, a hard-working team, and all of the participants and CicLAvia enthusiasts.

Successes for CicLAvia in 2023

By the numbers: Seven open street events in 2023 covering 33 miles within CicLAvia’s anchor communities, Heart of LA and South LA, as well as new parts of LA County.

Volunteer Contributions

New + Increased Programming: 2023 was an exciting year for CicLAvia. CicLAminis were introduced, smaller-scale events with a more pedestrian-oriented flair (CicLAmini-Watts and CicLAmini-North Hollywood) and celebrated with LADOT along ✌️Venice Blvd!, the new bike lanes and safety features along the stretch between National and Sepulveda.

5,978 Volunteer Hours: In 2023, over 1,043 Angelenos shared 5,978 hours of their time as event volunteers, more than triple the amount as the prior year.

CicLAvia as a Nonprofit Organization

Free for all, CicLAvia is a nonprofit organization committed to introducing Angelenos to the vibrant civic and cultural treasures throughout Los Angeles. CicLAvia highlights important issues to all Angelenos – from environmental health and air quality improvement to access to safe and open parks, physical and mental well-being.

Building Social Fabric through Open Streets

CicLAvia has captured the imagination of more than 1.9 million people who have traveled together along more than 294 miles of streets. CicLAvia builds a unifying social fabric, joyously connecting culturally diverse neighborhoods and neighbors to each other through open streets. CicLAvia is not just about cycling, it’s also about multiple modes of people-powered transportation. Whether one walks, strolls, skates, jogs, scooters, or bikes, CicLAvia creates so many incredible moments and experiences enjoying our city streets together.
