Mike “Tarzan” Spangler’s Journey to Break the Track Hour Record

Follow Mike 'Tarzan' Spangler's incredible journey as he sets a new San Diego Velodrome Age Group Hour Record for Men 50-54.

Tarzan’s Big Goals for the 2024 Season

The man his S2C Bosch pb Eliel teammates call “Tarzan” had 2 Big Goals for the 2024 Season: Earn a Top 5 Medal at Time Trial Nationals in Augusta, GA and set a new San Diego Velodrome Age Group Hour Record for Men 50-54.

Achieving Goal #1: Time Trial Nationals Success

In July, and thanks to his coach Benjamin Sharp of Sharp Coaching, Mike “Tarzan” Spangler accomplished Goal #1 and garnered a bronze medal in the Masters National Time Trial Championships.

Breaking the Track Hour Record

Then, on a brisk November morning and under the watchful eye of local track aficionado and instructor Jeff Seckendorf, Tarzan exceeded his expectations by not just eclipsing the old Track Age Group record of 40.283 km held by Andrew Lee, he also took the overall Track Hour Record from Taylor Warren by posting a 1 hour distance of 45.01 km on the 333.3 meter outdoor asphalt velodrome.

Spangler Reflects on His Achievement

“I’m super proud to be able to say I own the overall track record for now, especially at age 54. I’m sure someone younger and more fit will come along soon enough and smash it. But that’s what records are for— it’s a dangling carrot for someone, “It’s yours if you want it so come and get it!”
