With the race season in full swing in Southern California, it was nice to travel a little and head up to Monterey, CA for the Sea Otter Classic, which had a two-year pause due to the pandemic.
With the 2021 Sea Otter Classic going forward in full swing, the Sea Otter Classic hosted many different cycling events throughout the four-day event for cyclists to participate in. One of the featured road cycling events was the Circuit Race that brought out some heavy hitters and riders with good road fitness on a fun but challenging course.
The Circuit Race started and finished at the Tire Bridge and was held on the world-renowned Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca, for an exciting 11-turn, 2.4 mile closed-circuit course that features a 108’ elevation change and a fun downhill drop down the Corkscrew each lap.
The Circuit Race was held under ideal weather conditions. As the race headed out for the first lap, there was an early breakaway that consisted of seven riders from some of the stronger teams represented.
With this move going on lap one of the one-hour race, the seven riders came together to open up a solid lead. With the right teams being represented, it looked like this break was most likely going to stick.
As the race hit mid-race there were some individual and small group attempts to get across. However, the breakaway had over a minute and wasn’t coming back anytime soon.
With the race winding down, the breakaway was looking like it would come down to a field sprint.
As the breakaway rounded the last bend on the track, it was an all-out lead out from L39ion of Los Angeles, as they had the numbers in the race. Alec Cowan (L39ion of Los Angeles) crossed the line first for the win ahead of Cameron Piper (Team Illuminate), with Freddy Ovett (L39ion of Los Angeles) rounded out the top three.
