Life Time Grand Prix Round Two Concludes at UNBOUND Gravel 200

The second round of the Life Time Grand Prix concluded in Emporia with Sofía Gómez Villafañe and Mads Würtz Schmidt taking the race win.

Mud and Mechanical Challenges Shape the Women’s Race

The women headed south out of Emporia to kick off the 20th edition. Athletes faced their first technical challenge at mile 11, which took 2025 winner Karolina Migoń out of the leading group due to a crash in the thick mud, caused by sporadic downpours in the days before the race.

Lead Group Emerges Early in Women’s Competition

A group of early leaders formed at mile 32, which included race favorites, Sofía Gómez Villafañe, Cecily Decker, Paige Onweller and Geerike Schreurs (who is not part of the Life Time Grand Prix Series). Rosa Klöser was caught on the back foot due to a mechanical, chasing alone before she rejoined the lead group.

Sofía Gómez Villafañe Wins Five-Rider Sprint Finish

Paige Onweller spent the day yo-yoing off the back of the four leaders due to bike troubles, but managed to hold onto the group headed into the closing miles. Led down Commercial Street by Rosa Klöser, Sofía Gómez Villafañe kicked off the five-up sprint, which she held until the finish, driving over the line to secure the race win and maintain her lead in the Life Time Grand Prix Series.

Early Technical Sections Impact the Men’s Field

Meanwhile, mile 11 also posed a technical challenge in the men’s field, with several riders hitting the dirt and many forced to dismount in the mud. Amidst the chaos, a group of 15 riders went clear of the masses.

Würtz Schmidt, Swenson and Freeburn Launch Race-Winning Attack

At mile 60, Mads Würtz Schmidt (who is not part of the Life Time Grand Prix), Keegan Swenson, and Cobe Freeburn made a decisive move and established a gap that fluctuated around six minutes.

The trio maintained their lead until Cobe Freeburn was dropped at mile 110. He rejoined the chasing group, which included Brendan Johnston, Emil Herzog (who is not racing as part of the Series), Cameron Jones and Matthew Beers, who had to play a tactical game with two of his Specialized teammates up the road.

Keegan Swenson Sacrifices His Race for a Teammate

The defining moment of the day came at mile 150 when Mads Würtz Schmidt suffered a puncture, and Keegan Swenson sacrificed his chances by giving up his wheel so his teammate could maintain the lead alone.

Race Winner Reactions from UNBOUND Gravel 200

Mads Würtz Schmidt said:

The plan today was to be aggressive on Texaco Hill, and I probably got too excited, but Keegan, Cobe, and I got away, and we sent it. I was on a really good day, but I couldn’t have done it without Keegan – he is a champion. He sacrificed his race and Grand Prix for me, which was incredible, and it gave me extra motivation for the final hours.

Sofía Gómez Villafañe said:

That was a day of perseverance. I would say that Geerike had the cleanest race of the five of us, with Cecily hitting ground, Rosa flatting, and Paige dropping off and getting back on continuously.

Heading into UNBOUND Gravel, you could be the fittest athlete, but it might not mean a result for you. I think I had the smallest FTP out of us [in the lead group], so getting away solo wasn’t going to be an option. The plan was for Gee [Geerike] to try to go solo, but when it came to the sprint, we were going all in on me, so to get a one-two is unreal.
