Mavic Partners with Cervelo Belgian Waffle Ride for Neutral Support

In an emphatic move of authority, Mavic will partner with Monuments of Cycling to provide neutral race support for the 5th annual Cervélo Belgian Waffle Ride presented by SPY, the most unique cycling event in the United States.

Naming Mavic as the official support team of the BWR, the multi-year partnership will engage Mavic’s know-how for supporting riders as they traverse through 146 miles of road and 40 miles of pavé, dirt, gravel and sand, while ascending 13,000 feet during this Spring Classic event. In addition to elite level support of the Waffle riders, Mavic will also provide support for the more manageable Belgian Wafer Ride—a difficult event in its own right that covers half the distance and elevation of the full course, while still providing technical dirt sectors and climbs.

Known for supporting the best road races in the world since 1973, the variable nature of the BWR course will require additional support systems from Mavic via motorcycles, VW Golf SportWagens, and designated Special Service Course tents along the ever-changing terrain. Prepared to keep riders pedaling forward, Mavic’s tents and vehicles will be stocked with mechanics and the recently introduced Cosmic Pro Carbon SL, in addition to the Ksyrium Allroad, both of which will act as the perfect wheel for conquering the BWR course.

“We look forward to becoming a trusted partner of the legendary Hell of the North (County), providing assistance to all riders so they can race, or complete, such an epic event,” says Mike Wilson, North American brand manager for Mavic. “The logistical difficulties of supporting a 146-mile off- and on-road biking event are immense; however it’s a challenge we’re up for. We’re very honored to be the Neutral Support Service provider for such a monumental American event.”

Conceived in 2012, the BWR has continued to evolve into one of the best-known Spring Classic events in the United States, attracting a stacked field of professional road, CX and endurance riders. Held throughout San Diego county over sinuous, bumpy roads, gravel and dirt, riders must be physically prepared for the long distance mileage, while also being technically proficient in challenging terrain to finish. Due to the growing popularity of this type of event, the BWR excitedly welcomes the challenge of providing riders with a difficult course and memorable day on the bike, along with a level of support through Mavic that has been previously unavailable.

“It makes us really proud to have Mavic on board for the 2016 and 2017 installments of the BWR,” says BWR creator, Michael Marckx. “Our riders will now receive the best on-course support available to make their Classic experience more seamless than ever.”

To join in the fanfare, spectators can watch the race rollout from the Lost Abbey Brewery in San Marcos, CA at 7:00 am on Sunday, April 24. To enjoy Belgian ale and fanfare, the public is welcome to attend the expo on Saturday, April 23 from 12pm-5pm, and on Sunday, April 24 from 12pm-6pm.
