Stage 6 Post-Race Comments
On the race overall - Pat McQuaid, President, (UCI)
2/24/07 - “This race is bigger than it was last year.  There are more people on the sidelines.  The organization has gotten bigger.  I’m very happy with the organizers’ continued commitment to this event.  There’s a lot of things here that European races could learn from.  Even only in its second year, the history has started and the acceptance of the event has started.  I think you’ve arrived when you’ve gotten to that stage.  I’m very, very happy to come back to this event that is growing and is one day going to be a very important event on the UCI cycling calendar.“ More post race comments >

Amgen Tour Tracker 2.0 is the Bomb
2/22/07 - The Amgen Tour Tracker 2.0 live coverage has been absolutely awesome, providing live real time video coverage as the race happens. A caffeinated Robbie Ventura provides the play by play along side a very mellow Joe Silva. Since some overgrown trees are blocking out the satellite that Versus is on, this has saved the day. If you haven't experienced it when the race is going on then definately check it out.

Rider's Quotes from ATOC Stage 1
Leipheimer on recovering from the crash
2/19/07 - “One of the riders lost his hand and went over the bars and brought half the peloton down, and I was in there.  But that’s bike racing I was trying to motivate them (other riders) to get off the ground.  I tried to get on my bike right away, but I could see that wasn’t possible.  I finally got my bike going, but it felt like forever.  George (Hincapie) and Ivan (Basso) really started to ride hard to bring me back.  I’m honored to have (Ivan) Basso and (George) Hincapie sacrificing everything they have for me today.  (Although I knew) it would be impossible to come back to the leaders when they’re riding that hard.” More Rider's Quotes >

Rabobank's Graeme Brown Wins Stage One in Santa Rosa
2/19/07 - Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California from Sausalito to Santa Rosa ended in a dramatic photo finish win of two centimeters by Rabobank's Graeme Brown (AUS) following a crash on the second circuit around downtown Santa Rosa.   An earlier crash about 70 miles into the race resulted in one of the race favorites, Team CSC's Dave Zabriskie, being forced to abandon the event.  He was taken to a local hospital for tests and has been released in good condition with a mild concussion and no fractures or other injuries. Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team) retained the Amgen Leader's Jersey after a determined dash over the final 30 miles, which was spearheaded by his teammate, Italy's Ivan Basso, to catch a breakaway group of four talented climbers. Cycling Race Says It Failed to Test for EPO
2/17/07 - From the New York Times - In only its second year, the Tour of California, which begins Sunday in San Francisco, has become the country’s most important professional cycling event, attracting more than 1 million spectators last year and a field of riders this year that ranks as the strongest ever assembled for a race in the United States. But the issue of performance-enhancing drugs hovers over the sport of cycling, and over the race. And now, organizers of the Tour of California, who boasted after last year’s race that no riders tested positive for banned substances, have acknowledged that riders were not tested for what has become the sport’s most abused drug — the blood booster known as EPO. more >

Welcoming Testing, Team Battles Cycling’s Image
2/14/07 - From the New York Times - On these mild, clear winter days in the mountains east of San Diego, one professional cycling team is trying to set itself apart from the doping scandals that have shaken its sport. Like most teams, Team Slipstream is training on roller-coaster roads, sometimes more than 120 miles a day for more than six hours at a time. But there is a visible difference between this team and others: at the crook of the riders’ arms are a series of dark needle marks. They are the results of repeated blood tests, part of a drastic and innovative anti-doping program the team began here last month in an attempt to prove its riders are clean. more >

“Are you Ready To Race?” by Dave Jordaan, USA Certified Elite Coach
2/13/07 - The racing season is about to begin. Before your 1st race of the year you need to complete a few basic tasks to prepare for this season. The 1st thing to do is to prepare your race bag. Clean out your old food items i.e. throw out those 1-year old power bars and smelly gloves. If you do not have a racing bag as yet choose an old sports bag - preferably with a wet liner and then fill it with the following essential items; more >

Leading the charge in 2007 is new Race Director Tony Leckie, former race director for the San Dimas Stage Race.  “We made some modifications to the courses keeping them downtown and great for spectators, but we’ve also ensured they remain challenging for all competitors.  Furthermore, this year racers will be competing for cash prizes for individual stages and like last year, a large payout for those that register for the omnium,” Leckie said. more >

Shawn Olin breaks 8 Year Fiesta Island Time Trial Record
2/11/07 - The record set by Olympic cyclist Shaun Wallace on 9/12/1999 in 25:12 was broken today in 25:05 (20k/original long course), 29.72 MPH avg speed, by DeWalt Racing CAT 1 cyclist Shawn Olin in the wind, rain and mud on a custom built Tiemeyer pursuit fixed gear bike with 175mm FSA track cranks, Vision aerobars, Blackwell Research track disc/100mm wheelset, and Dura Ace front brake. He ran a 52x13 gear and spun over 90RPM, having had to come out of the aerobars in each corner due to the slick muddy conditions. Shawn is the 2004 US Military Time Trial National Champion.

Discovery Channel to Pull out of Sponsorship After 2007
2/9/07 - Discovery Channel has decided to pull the plug on sponsoring America's premiere cycling team at the end of this year. This comes on the wake of the firing of the Discovery Channel's CEO Billy Campbell earlier this week. The team is owned by Tailwind Sports and co-owned by Lance Armstrong and his attorney Bill Stapleton. This is unfortunate for the riders and staff. Hopefully they can find a replacement sponsor with deep pockets for 2008.

Health Net to Ride MERCO CREDIT UNION Cycling Classic
2/6/07 - The Health Net presented by Maxxis Cycling Team has entered nine riders, out of maximum of ten allowed, for the MERCO CREDIT UNION Cycling Classic Presented by McLane Pacific in Merced, CA.  The Health Net Team has become a dominant team over the past few years with one of their riders, now retired, winning the Downtown Grand Prix four consecutive years and the Road Race once.  To win at MERCO – in normal weather conditions – it takes a rider with a huge amount of speed and sprinting skills.  The races are long (124 miles in the Road Race and 45 in the Grand Prix) so teamwork is important.  Most teams send their sprinters.  If the weather gives riders some wind and rain these three riders may have what it takes to go the distance in a breakaway and win.
