Wind Tunnel Testing
By Neil Shirley, Kelly Benefit Strategies Professional Cycling Team
1/29/10 - I recently had the opportunity to do something that I’ve been hoping to do for the past few years but have never had the resources to make happen until now. Kelly Benefit Strategies flew seven of my teammates and me to North Carolina to visit the A2 Wind Tunnel for two days worth of aerodynamics testing on our new Orbea Ordu time trial bikes. I’ve known of the benefits that can be gained by wind tunnel testing, but due to the high cost it’s been something that was impossible for me to justify spending my own money on. Fortunately, KBS saw the advantages and decided to make the investment for a handful of us to have our positions tested in the wind tunnel. I had just recently received my Orbea Ordu time trial bike so I set it up based off my old position. I found this position by setting the bike up to be UCI legal first off. Then, within those limitations I tried to mix aerodynamics with comfort. It was a fairly standard position, nothing extreme. I’m not a super flexible person so I definitely had some limitations on how extreme of a position would work for me. more >

Adageo Energy Pro Cycling Ride, Clothing Sales to Benefit Haiti Relief Effort
1/28/10 - Adageo Energy Pro Cycling is holding its team training camp in Los Angeles this week and will conclude camp on Sunday, Jan. 31, with a ride in Santa Monica, Calif. The ride is open to people of all ages and abilities in the Southern California cycling community. Exact time and departure location will be announced Friday on their Facebook and Twitter. In addition, The Adageo Energy Pro Cycling Team is contributing to relief efforts in Haiti by donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of its 2010 team clothing to the American Red Cross. Adageo Energy Team Director Josh Horowitz said the idea to contribute to such a worthwhile effort made perfect sense with the timing of the sale of the team’s new clothing. The Red Cross is taking the lead on providing a number of valuable services to quake-stricken Haiti. “When Clay Womack (Adageo Energy Founder) and I put this program together, he always wanted it to be about more than just bike racing,” Horowitz said. “So when he came to me to see how we could use the team to help in Haiti, the timing of the clothing sales was perfect.” more info >

2010 Amgen Tour of California is Seeking Volunteers
1/27/10 - Volunteer opportunities for the 2010 Amgen Tour of California are now available. Anyone wishing to volunteer for an opportunity to participate in the fifth-annual cycling race can apply online for positions, including hospitality, volunteer course marshals, security, and media operations, among others. Considered cycling’s most important and successful road race in the United States, some of America's most accomplished cyclists, including Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer, Dave Zabriskie and George Hincapie have already committed to participating in the 2010 Amgen Tour of California. The fifth edition of the annual race will travel to 16 host cities throughout the state over the course of eight days from May 16-23, including the very first mountaintop finish in race history.  The eight-day race will begin in Nevada City and travel by some of the state's most scenic landmarks, with the overall finish taking place in Thousand Oaks. "The support of the volunteers in the local communities that the Amgen Tour of California travels through is essential to the success of the race," said Andrew Messick, president of AEG Sports, presenter of the race.  "Getting involved with the race as a volunteer allows local residents to take part in an event that captures the attention of local communities and the world, in addition to witnessing first-hand in the behind-the-scenes planning involved in an event of this stature." More than 4,500 volunteers in communities throughout the state participated in last year’s race, making it seamless and successful from start to finish, and solidifying it as the largest sporting event in the state of California.  In each of the start and finish cities, as many as 350 local volunteers were recruited to help staff the race. BMC Racing Team Heads to Southern California for Training Camp this Week
1/24/10 - Halfway into its two-week training camp, the BMC Racing Team heads south in search of different terrain, a change of scenery and better weather. The dreary blanket of rain and cold lifted from the Northern California area early Friday afternoon to give the team’s 18 riders a taste of some well-deserved sunshine in the second half of a five-hour training ride. It marked only the second time in six days that the squad didn’t spend its entire ride pedaling in the rain.  Saturday, the BMC Racing Team ventures south from the Santa Rosa area to San Francisco for a reconnaissance ride of one stage of the Amgen Tour of California. It will be an opportunity to review some of the challenges the team will face when America’s most prestigious stage race is run in May. The ride from the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge to Santa Cruz is expected to take five hours. Following a transfer to Monterey, California, Sunday and Monday’s training rides will mark a transition to Southern California, where the weather has not been much better the past week. By Monday night, the BMC Racing Team will be the Los Angeles area, where it will remain through to the end of the week. In addition to more training on some of the same roads the Tour of California will travel, time will be spent taking team photos and video and meeting with sponsors and the media.

1/22/10- New elite women's SoCal cycling team looking to launch tomorrow's pros, veterans Bausch & Schuster lead effort to develop young female athletes. Seeing a void in the development of well-rounded female athletes in Southern California, a pair of veteran cyclists, Dotsie Bausch and Pam Schuster, have formed the InCycle/Time To Track presented by Empower Coaching Systems cycling team.  Although the elite eight-rider squad will primarily compete throughout California, the young riders will race in regional and National Racing Calendar (NRC) events while being mentored and groomed to compete on the national and international circuits as professionals and Olympians.  While success on the bike is important to the team, InCycle/Time To Track presented by Empower Coaching Systems will define success differently because the mission of the unit emphasizes fostering a fun, positive, respectful and nurturing environment to support young females in goal-oriented pursuits in cycling and life beyond athletics. more >

Team Pista Palace (Formerly 5 Star Fish/5 Star WVO) Unveils Team and Roster
1/21/10 - Team Pista Palace recently wrapped up a week long training camp based out of sponsor Pista Palace hometown San Diego, California. This is the 5th year that director and sponsor Justin Beope has taken the helm of the dominant amateur elite team formerly known as 5 Star Fish/5 Star WVO. The Elite team has put together what it believes is the strongest team in the southwest and beyond. Winner of the San Marcos and Brentwood GP races is Eric Marcoutte. He is joined by recent professionals J.R. Grabinger, Corey Steinbrecher, and Adam Livingston. The team will focus mainly on stage races in the Southwest and NRC races throughout the area. "We believe with the team we have assembled this year we can and will compete on an NRC level. We have guys that have won and podiumed NRC races and they will again. Having the experience and level of talent we have on an elite level yet not having the personality struggles that can sometimes plague a professional team allows us to be more team oriented rather than racer oriented".  more >

BMC Racing Team's Training Camp Gets Wet in California's Storms
1/20/10 - Driving rain, gusty winds, water-logged roads and even a bit of sunshine. Day 3 of the BMC Racing Team training camp had a little bit of everything. Tuesday’s five-hour training ride took the 18 riders to the coast, where the fury of late morning storms had given way to blue skies and pounding waves from the surf of the Pacific Ocean. Following a brief stop to refuel with First Endurance nutrition, the ride was back underway. “It was pretty spirited the whole time,” BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Sportif Mike Sayers said. “The guys who will be racing at the Tour of Qatar did two pretty hard efforts in the rotation.” With two solid days of training in the books – and severe weather advisories in effect for the Santa Rosa, California area, Sayers is giving the riders Wednesday off. On the agenda is a trip to San Francisco for sightseeing that will undoubtedly include a stop at the Golden Gate Bridge. The team got in the recreational mode Tuesday night with a stop at the re-known Riviera Ristorante, home to delicious Italian food and all things professional cycling.

Greipel Takes His Second Consecutive Stage Win At the Tour Down Under
1/20/10 - HTC-Columbia's André Greipel won his second consecutive stage of the Santos Tour Down Under on Wednesday, sprinting into the small German heritage town of Hahndorf for his seventh stage victory of the Tour out of the eleven he has raced over the last three years. A break of three were away for the majority of the race earning a time gap of 11 minutes but eventually being reeled in by the peloton. "It was a good day for us because we didn't need to put a lot of effort in to chase the break down during the race," explained Greipel. "We wanted to let the break succeed today and save our energy for the harder stages coming up.  However the other teams were keen to get the break back and did the work so we also helped a little. Towards the end of the race the team came together as a unit for the lead out and Goss did the final pull for me.  It's nice to win here again. The climb during the race was quite difficult, especially because of the heat but the guys looked after me and we stayed in the front over the climb. Tomorrow will be a hard day but we're ready to give it everything."

BMC Racing Team Training Camp Gets Underway in Santa Rosa
1/18/10 - The BMC Racing Team converged from all parts of the globe in Santa Rosa, California, Saturday to ready for the team’s two-week training camp. While seven riders and a host of support staff are on hand at the Santos Tour Down Under in Australia, the team’s remaining riders and staff assembled throughout the day via San Francisco International Airport. Past world champion Alessandro Ballan arrived from Italy at mid-afternoon with Assistant Director Sportif and former professional Fabio Baldato. Each BMC Racing Team rider found more than 100 items of racing and casual clothing, courtesy of Hincapie Sportswear, waiting for them in their rooms at the Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel and Spa. The first order of business for many of them was a training ride on their new BMC pro machine SLC01 and racemaster SLX01 bicycles. With heavy rain and strong winds forecast for the region for the next week, the opportunity to take a spin in overcast – but dry – conditions was a welcome one. Sunday’s first official day of training camp consisted of a variety of activities on and off their BMC bicycles. Fly V australia Win Gold and Silver in Championships
1
/10/10 - David Kemp claimed second place in the 2010 Australian Championships to claim Fly V australia’s second medal of the championships to go with Aaron Kemps Gold medal won earlier in the week at the Criterium. Fly V australia’s race plan was laid out for all to see within half a lap in the 16-lap 160 km road race. In a catch me if you can strategy Fly V Australia placed 3 riders into the first break of the day. 5 others joined David Kemp, Aaron Kemps and Hayden Brooks as they set about amassing a 7-minute lead. They got down to work in such a way that the lead they built up ultimately became insurmountable for the chasers. In a well laid out plan inform riders; Bernie Sulzberger, Jonathan Cantwell, Jai Crawford and Darren Rolfe were given a ‘free’ ride in the peloton. Team DS Henk Vogels said “Having three in the move took the pressure off us and allowed us to be in a position to follow the expected moves from the PRO Tour riders.” Vogels added, “With 10 laps completed and the break with still almost 7 minutes it became evident that the chasers had a big job ahead of them, then at three laps to go and still over four minutes in front we knew the race would be decided from the break.” David Kemp was granted the final position by the National Selection committee in the National Team to contest the Santos Tour Down Under (TDU) beginning in Adelaide on 17 January. Kemp will now join Fly V australia teammate Jonathan Cantwell in the National team to contest the TDU.

Brewery Broadens Social Bike Program
1
/6/10 - The New Belgium Brewing Company has invested in an international social bike program to ensure it serves the Southwest of the United States. The Social Bike Business program creates jobs through locally manufactured transportation bicycles for disadvantaged people. Led by One Street, a global bicycle advocacy organization, the program is underway in Prague, Budapest and Los Angeles. The New Belgium Brewing Company prides itself on its sustainable operations through use of wind power, building with green materials, reuse of resources and recycling. Their parking lot is designed for bicycles. And their grant making program is one of only a few outside of the bike industry that specifically favors programs for increasing bicycling. One Street’s Social Bike Business program tackles poverty by providing affordable, quality transportation bicycles through locally-run bicycle community centers and bike shops that serve disadvantaged neighborhoods. One Street has developed the replicable program elements and helps local leaders raise the funds needed to open their bicycle community center. At their center, locals can take part in certification job training courses that also pertain to other business careers including business management, customer service and bicycle manufacture. This program offers a fresh look at solving the serious lack of access to bike shops and affordable, sturdy transportation bicycles for the majority of the world’s population. It offers a more efficient, global solution that keeps bikes close to where they are made as it lifts people from poverty forever. Through running their own bike business, or simply buying their own bike, people can save on transportation costs, increase their quality of life and create additional business opportunities.

Adageo/Liquid Fitness Team Partners with iSportWest and Velocomp
1
/4/10 - iSportWest in conjunction with Velocomp, the makers of the iBike line of power meters, will be sponsoring of the Adageo/Liquid Fitness professional cycling team for 2010. The Southern California based Adageo/Liquid Fitness team was recently included as one of only eleven UCI Continental teams for the upcoming year. Adageo/Liquid Fitness team members have already begun riding with their new iBike power meters.  Team member Matt Landers admits being surprised by his experience, “Not only was I blown away by the iBike’s accuracy, I was stunned by how much insight it offered me.” John Hamann of Velocomp was not, “We’ve worked long and hard to develop a power meter that not only addressed the issues of existing power meters (weight, inflexibility, complexity and cost) but most importantly to deliver on the imperatives of consistency, accuracy and quality”. “Partnering with the Adageo team will not only enable team members to increase their own fitness and abilities, but it will allow us to gather even more feedback from a racer’s perspective.  Training solely based on long miles and heart rate is now antiquated. If you are not training with power, you are limiting your potential.  iSportWest and Velocomp are excited to be working with the Adageo team for 2010”  says Eben Benade, owner of iSportWest. The Adageo/Liquid Fitness team’s preliminary race calendar includes a mix of regional and national-level events, including the San Dimas and Redlands Classic stage races in March, the Ventura County Stage Race in May, the International Championship in Philadelphia in June, the Bend Memorial Clinic Cascade Cycling Classic in July and the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah in August.

We are totally committed to supporting Alberto and the rest of the team in their pursuit of another Tour victory,” said Specialized Chief Brand Officer, Ben Capron from the company’s Headquarters in Morgan Hill, California. “Winning the Tour has been a dream of ours for many years, but even more important is the opportunity to work with riders like Contador and Vinokourov to help us create the best bikes possible and bring them to riders everywhere.” In recent years, Astana was sponsored by Trek, who is now sponsoring Lance Armstrong's Radio Shack Team. Likewise, Specialized is shifting gears and has ended their sponsorship of Tom Boonen's Quick Step Team in favor of the opportunity to work with Tour de France winner Alberto Contador and Team Astana. Fans can follow Alberto Contador and Team Astana throughout the 2010 racing calendar at iamspecialized.com.
