Registration is open for premier charity cycling event raising money
to fund collaborative cancer research in San Diego
Padres Pedal the Cause announced a first for its annual charity cycling event – several routes will cross the Coronado Bay Bridge during the fifth annual Padres Pedal the Cause event that takes place on November 11-12, 2017, at Petco Park. Event weekend will feature courses of various distances for all skill levels, a stationary bike zone, virtual riding, a children’s ride as well as numerous volunteer opportunities for all those who want to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The event raises money to find a cure for cancer by funding four major world-class research institutions in San Diego.
“Riding over the Coronado Bridge and finishing on center field at Petco Park make Padres Pedal the Cause a once-in-a-lifetime cycling experience,” said Anne Marchand, executive director of Padres Pedal. “How many bike rides cross over one of the most beautiful bridges in the country as well as finish in centerfield of America’s best ballpark with your image splashed on the video board? This year our goal is to deliver an unforgettable experience to 2,300 participants while raising over $3 million for cancer research in San Diego.”
Registration for the 2017 edition of Padres Pedal is now open featuring a brand new website at https://www.gopedal.org that includes information on the event, options for everyone to participate whether you cycle or not, as well as information on how the money raised is making an impact in the fight against cancer. “2016 was a big year for Padres Pedal the Cause and just the start to what we see as tremendous long-term growth and impact here in San Diego,” according to Bill Koman, founder of Padres Pedal the Cause. “The collaboration among our four world-class beneficiary institutions accelerates the knowledge sharing needed for meaningful discovery. And now more than ever, private sources of funding for cancer research are critical to sustaining high-risk, high-reward projects that have the true potential to cure cancer.”
Padres Pedal the Cause is possible through the generous support of its institutional partner, the San Diego Padres, and a collection of other key corporate partners throughout San Diego. 100% of all money raised by riders through fundraising is donated to cancer research. All expenses are underwritten through the generous support of corporate sponsors including BD, Sempra Energy, Wells Fargo, Qualcomm, and the Koman Family Foundation, among many others. Primal Wear, a leading custom apparel manufacturer in the bike industry, is back as the jersey sponsor–every registered rider receives their choice of a custom Padres Pedal jersey or technical shirt. RIDE Cyclery is the bike shop sponsor and hosts numerous training rides as well as providing special pricing for Padres Pedal riders.
“Cancer is a disease that has impacted all of us, and it struck our Padres family again this year with the diagnosis of Randy Jones,” said Padres Senior Vice President, Community and Military Affairs Tom Seidler. “This disease can make you feel helpless, but Padres Pedal the Cause allows us to make a real impact – one that stays right here in our own community. We are proud to partner with Pedal for the third year in 2017. We look forward to working together to continue to grow this one-of-a-kind event.”
Padres Pedal funds projects that represent the latest in innovative, collaborative cancer research. Earlier this year, Marchand presented a check for $2,031,989 to researchers from Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Rady Children’s Hospital–San Diego. The award represents the total amount raised by the organization’s 2016 cycling event this past November.
