AgnewBrusavich, a Torrance-based serious personal injury law firm, hosted its 20th Annual College School Scholarship Program Banquet on Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Doubletree Hotel in Torrance. AgnewBrusavich awarded 22 students from 13 local high schools with the necessary funds to assist in meeting their first semester obligations for tuition, books, fees and participation in the Honors Transfer Program, which will almost guarantee them a transfer to a four-year university. The Banquet also honored the recipient of AgnewBrusavich’s Community Service Award, philanthropist JJ Hendershot of Equinox Palos Verdes.
“This year marks many milestones for us – our 20th year hosting our scholarship program, the 30th year since we founded AgnewBrusavich, and my 40th year practicing law,” said Partner Gerald E. Agnew, Jr.“We are proud to continue providing well-deserving high school graduates with an opportunity to further their education.”
Founded in 1994, the program was created to help local high school students, who have good grades, determination and the desire to enroll in a community college to further their academic goals, but are unable due to financial limitations, as well as family or personal adversity. To date, AgnewBrusavich has awarded more than 500 students with scholarships to help with funding.
“20 years ago, we made a commitment to assist students who wanted to create a future for themselves and recognize them for their academic and personal achievements,” adds Partner Bruce M. Brusavich. “In addition, the firm seeks to recognize individuals in our community that are helping our younger generation succeed.”
Community Service Award – JJ Hendershot
As the Group Fitness Manager for Equinox Palos Verdes and Manager of Philanthropy for Equinox California, Ms. Hendershot is the second recipient of AgnewBrusavich’s Community Service Award. Fusing her passion for fitness and philanthropy, she founded and created Cycle for Heroes and Climb for Heroes, which gathered more than 2,600 participants and raised more than $500,000 for The Heroes Project, an organization that does extraordinary work with military veterans and their families. She also coordinated the Equinox’s national Cycle for Survival program for 2014, which raised $20 million for rare cancer research.
Last year, the firm awarded five-time Olympian Connie Paraskevin for sharing her cycling passion through a free program called Connie Cycling, which provides training to youth so they can experience cycling in a world-class facility, taught by a world-class champion.
