The CBR Kool ‘Fit Criterium in Costa Mesa saw the Cycling Community come out in force to honor and raise funds for fallen rider Chris “Cono” Contreras’s family, who was fatally injured in a racing accident on Memorial Day.
The event was hosted by California Bicycle Racing’s Chris Lotts and Vera who oversaw the days races and fundraising efforts. There was a nice crowd throughout the day as many teams donated money to set up their tents to raise additional funds. A raffle and silent auction gave riders a chance to win something nice while also raising additional funds.
Each race during the day started with a neutralized Memorial Lap for Cono and ended with a podium presentation presented by Cono’s wife Akiyo Kozakaya. In addition, fresh flowers were presented to the podium winners for a special touch courtesy of Armin Rahm, ICE who also donated jerseys to the winners.
The Pro 1/2 Men’s race and Women’s 1-3 race, saw Ivan Dominguez (MRI- Monster Media) and Suzanne Sonye (Helens) come away victorious on the day. Dominguez also won the Masters 35 + race for a two-fer.
