Riders Enjoy Great Racing at the 5th Annual Imperial Classic
2/24/10 - The 5th Annual Imperial Classic was held over the weekend in Imperial Valley under windy conditions. Winds gusting at up to 25 mph made for dangerous gutter riding for much of the race and blew the field apart early in the Pro men's race. Matthew Rice (Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling Team) powered away from teammate Hilton Clarke and Iggy Silva (Trek-LIVESTRONG U23 Team) on the final lap to win the 5th Annual Imperial Classic.  The Women's Pro 1-3 race was won by Trina Jacobson (ACQUA AL 2/SDBC), with Deborah Durand (Helens/Cannondale) in 2nd and Jenny Rios (Helens/Cannondale) in 3rd. All podium finishers went home with giant bags of fresh Imperial Valley winter vegetables and as many tangerines as they could carry.

Race Report: Simple Green Criterium Women’s Race
By Priscilla Calderon, Incycle / Time to Track
2/23/10 - The Women Pro 1,2,3, had a good sized field of about 40. The field contained very good sprinters which included Anna Lang,  Jennifer Wilson, Tiffany Pezzolo and the Helen’s squad was out in full force. Helen's being the more "dominate" team as far as numbers goes. Once the whistle was blown, off we went with a few attacks here and there. All of the SC Velo - Incycle/TTT girls were on every move. Lea was on everything that looked dangerous yet promising. There were only a few primes, but Incycle/TTT managed to collect them. If there was a move up ahead Incycle/TTT was being represented. With 4 laps to go, it was obvious that it was going to come down to a field sprint. Just by instinct we all meet at the front of the field for a perfect lead out train. A girl from NOW-MS told me after the race it was a sea of blue and orange at the front. Our team captain, Pam, had discussed before the race how she wanted the lead out train to go down and who would pull where and how far, and it happened exactly like she said it would. Katie started the lead out with Bonnie delivering Pam and I off at the last corner. I was battling for Pam's wheel for laps on end it seemed like. That's a VERY popular wheel by the way. Jen Wilson was trying to over take my wheel countless times with one to go, In the last turn Wilson tried one last time to overtake Pam's wheel by taking the turn inside, but to no success. Pam started to sprint with me closely on her wheel, I looked back to see that we had a pretty descent gap to roll in first and second WOOT WOOT!!!

The racers will hit speeds of over 45 mph as they enter Harbor Drive, but will drop below 10 mph as they soldier up and over Cove Road, which features an 18% grade. The criterium on Sunday, April 11th, will again attract the nation’s top professional and amateur racers. 2/17/10 – One of SoCal's top MTB racers Yoshio Garcia, age 22, has been in the hospital since being hit by a car on his way to work on January 14, 2010. Tour of Qatar Diary – Stages 5 and 6 - Making the Front Group and the Last Day
By Justin Williams, Trek-LIVESTRONG U23 Team
2/14/10 - Today started off slow and we were all pretty relaxed.  For some reason, I was having a hard time waking up and getting my head in the game.

A few teams rode to the start. Tim Roe, who is taking Taylor’s place in the Tour of Oman, also rode to the start. We had a quick talk before the stage and took a few picks. We figured it was going to be another controlled day and a break would go and it would be a nice tempo at the start. We shared a few laughs with the Lotto boys and then we were off.

The first hour and twenty minutes was so fast, that I was spun out in my 53 x 11.  Other than not being able to concentrate, I felt good. It's hard to explain, but I was so tired that my eyes were heavy and my arms seemed weak, but I passed through it.

When we hit the headwind section, a break went up the road and we rode tempo. The day seemed to go on forever and I kept bugging Axel to find out how many kilometers were left in the race. more >

Stage 8: Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village/Agoura Hills Circuit Race
There is nothing easy about Stage 8 of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California. The cities of Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills host the final 84 miles (four 21 mile circuits) of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California, which finishes in the worldwide headquarter community of title sponsor Amgen. What starts as a beautiful rolling stage gets a bit challenging at Mulholland Highway.  Long regarded as one of the most scenic climbs in southern California, and a favorite haunt of motorcyclists, Mulholland Highway features steep climbs and numerous switchbacks, making it a great place for spectators. As the riders pass the Malibu Family Winery, they will start a twisting and technical descent on Westlake Blvd.  In less than an hour, the riders will be back at the finish line and bracing themselves for three more laps.  If ever there was a chance to see a change in the leader and sprint jerseys, it will be here.

Tour of Qatar Diary – Stage 4 - I Think I Found a New Hero
By Justin Williams, Trek-LIVESTRONG U23 Team
2/10/10 - This is getting out of hand. I don't know what to say. I would love to win a stage here and shut some people up, but crashing at 40 mph doesn't seem like much fun in February. I’d rather win the Green Jersey at the San Dimas Stage Race. At least for now.

It's crazy how much harder this is. Then you think how much more focused you have to be and how one guy’s mistake could end your whole season. Aaahhh, okay today's stage was pretty hot and I took my under shirt off while getting ready to ride to the stage since it was only a few kilometers away. We got to the start pretty early, so we sat around looking at the cars at the Ferrari and Maserati dealership.

When we finally got underway, everyone seemed really mellow and there wasn’t much fighting for position through neutral zone. more >

Tour of Qatar Diary, Stage 3 - So Close, Yet So Far Away
By Justin Williams, Trek-LIVESTRONG U23 Team
2/9/10 - D
ay three started like a race. Everyone wanted their spot at the front and when there is 120 guys that can be a problem. My Trek-LiveSTRONG teammate, Alex Dowsett, went with the early move. It was good to see him mixing it up. Back in the field, it was fast but not horrible. The first 20 + kilometers were cross/tailwind, so it was a big bunch.

We started to get toward the first turn into a cross wind and the tension was building. Guys are such A-Holes in the field, but I'm guessing it’s something that has to grow on you. I made it to the corner in pretty good position. But in the final meters to the corner, the group slammed on the brakes and I found myself in the back and then on the back of teammate Cody Campbell. As I was going down fast, I hit my hip pretty hard. All I could think about is, “Who the hell sprints and fights so hard to get to a corner first and hits the brakes this hard?” more >

Tour of Qatar Diary, Stage 2 - Welcome to the ProTour Kid!
By Justin Williams, Trek-LIVESTRONG U23 Team
2/8/10 - Welcome to the ProTour kid! "You've only got about 15 more years of this left in you career," said Reed our swanny (Soigneur).

Wow, today started off slower than a Sunday Cruise. It was nerve racking for the first 30k and I ended up stopping twice to use the bathroom. Two guys went up the road and a Garmin guy waved them off.

Everything felt like dream! All these guys were around me that I go to YouTube to see. Yeah, well that didn't last much longer, as we made a right turn and the fireworks started. It was like someone lit a rocket and we went from 22 mph to 32 mph in a crosswind. I was about 25 riders back, which was too far back. more >

Tour of Qatar Diary, Stage 1 – Team Time Trial
By Justin Williams, Trek-LIVESTRONG U23 Team
2/7/10 - The day before the first stage of the Tour of Qatar, things started to get a little tense on the team. After a few TTT (Team Time Trial) efforts it was clear that we needed a little more practice. I hadn't been feeling good, so I'd pulled off a little early and watched the guys kill it.

We have so many talented guys, we all knew with a bit of luck and good legs the Trek-LIVESTRONG U23 Team could surprise a few teams. Axel (Merckx) could tell I wasn't myself, so he pulled me aside to talk and I assured him I was a little jet lagged and super nervous. He made it clear that we were lucky to be here and it should always be fun at the end of the day. I started to feel a lot more at ease after that and everything on the team seemed like it started to fall into place for the TTT.

Today's Team Time Trial was pretty cool. I woke up at 4:45 am, because I was so excited and waited for it to be time for breakfast. When I finally got down and told Axel how long I had been up he told me he always raced better with less sleep the night before and that kind of made me feel better. more >

Quote of the Day
2/6/10 - In an interview about Bradley Wiggins, Jonathan Vaughters said, "The 2009 Tour route was suited to Brad, but 2010 is less so. In 2009, the tactics worked in his favour and Astana were soft-pedalling a bit to not embarrass Lance [Armstrong]." Armstrong took offense and Twittered, "I won't be forgetting this comment anytime soon. #whatatool." Let the games begin!

H2O Overdrive Triple Crown Opener Drawing World Class Racers
2/6/10 - The 2010 H2O Overdrive Triple Crown presented by Specialized is on the radar of some of the World’s top Mountain Bike talent, according to US Cup management. “We are very excited with the feedback we have been receiving from the industry and riders attending the opening round of the H2O Overdrive Triple Crown All Mountain Series stated US Cup Marketing Director Ty Kady.  “To date, I have confirmation from some of North America’s top riders, plus 2009 women’s World Championship Bronze medalist Lene Byberg of the Factory Specialized team is set to race, along with her teammate Todd Wells.” “I can also confirm that a lot of top talent will be attending, including newly signed Cannondale Factory riders Jeremiah Bishop and Tinker Juarez.  Team Sho-Air/Specialized will be sending five time Australian champion Sid Taberlay, along with Max Plaxton and Tad Elliot.  We also expect some of the Kenda/Felt team, some of the Subaru/Gary Fisher crew, as well as a possible Geoff Kabush sighting with his Rocky Mountain/Maxxis team.  All in all, we expect the field to be loaded in both the men and women’s races as they go after potentially huge prize money and media coverage!” continued Kady. "But let’s not forget about all the privateers, both regionally and nationally that can come stake their claim” reiterated Kady. “We could be paying as deep as 30 spots, and we have a Top U23 and Top Senior (oldest) rider bonus too. Interview with 2008 U-23 National Criterium Champion Justin Williams
By Christy Nicholson, SoCalCycling.com

2/1/10 - We caught up with Justin Williams as he gets ready to kick off the 2010 season. Justin started racing as a junior with the Major Motion Development Team. He then went on to race for Rock Racing from 2007-2009, where he won the U-23 Criterium National Championships in 2008 and has become known as one of the fastest sprinters. This week he heads to the Tour of Qatar with his new team, the Trek-LIVESTRONG U23 Team.

SoCalCycling.com:  Justin, how did you get introduced to bike racing and how old were you when you started racing?

Justin Williams: My Dad is a cyclist, so it was like a family day growing up going to races. I always would see kids riding and knew I wanted to try it, but didn't really push for a bike until I was about 14. With a little help from Rahsaan Bahati and David Pulliam from the Major Motion Development Team it was all systems go!

SoCalCycling.com:  Is riding and racing something that you loved from the beginning?

Justin Williams: Racing I loved. I'm very competitive. I always wanted to race and I loved WINNING. Training I hated. I didn't really have to train because my talent was so high. I'd ride four times a week for a hour, but when it caught up and it was time to put in the hours I struggled a bit so I'm starting to love training. Full Interview >

BMC Racing Team Forms Solid Bond at California Training Camp
2/3/10 - The BMC Racing Team’s training camp in California produced something even more important than two solid weeks of riding to prepare the squad for the next nine months of racing. BMC Racing Team Director Sportif John Lelangue said the camaraderie that was fostered among 20 riders and more than two dozen staff and managers will be just as worthwhile as the miles the riders put in from Jan. 16th to the 31st. “The most important thing we got out of camp was that this team became one block: the BMC Racing Team,” he said. “Everyone knows the objectives, everyone is working well together and everyone became friends like they had known each other for years.”  Often spending up to six hours on their BMC bicycles each day, the riders practiced sprints, lead-outs and team time trialing during training rides along the California coastline. The camp also provided them the opportunity to learn about the team’s sponsors and try out new equipment. BMC Racing Team President Jim Ochowicz said he was encouraged by what he saw during the two weeks. “Seeing all the guys working together and watching the chemistry develop on and off the bikes was pretty exciting and we achieved what we set out to do,” he said.  American John Murphy, who is beginning his fourth season as a professional, said the BMC Racing Team camp took training to the next level. The days were long, he said, but also extremely productive. “We definitely saw the extreme amount of stuff we could fit into one day,” he said. “But I had a good time and everyone got to know everyone else so it was really good.”
